Two and a half days or a five-day pattern give Connaught’s nursery a practical shape for family life. This is the school’s provision for three- and four-year-olds in Knowle West, Bristol, with children accepted from the day after their third birthday. Nursery sits within the primary academy, rather than operating as a separate setting.
For children taking the 15-hour pattern, the week groups attendance into two full days and a Wednesday half-day. The 30-hour pattern runs daily from 8.30am to 3pm. Those arrangements make the nursery week predictable, with the shorter pattern concentrated at either end of the week.
Learning includes enrichment from nursery onwards, through classroom activities alongside visitors, trips, special events and events involving families. At home, Boromi and Family Bingo are the named nursery learning options. These give parents specific ways to join in with learning beyond the session.
Teaching needs attention. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Requires improvement following the inspection on 26 and 27 November 2024. Staff in early years did not understand the curriculum’s purposes clearly enough, while checks on understanding across the school lacked precision. For families, the important issue is how teaching identifies misunderstandings and helps children retain what they learn.
Before a September start, the academy introduces children to their class and offers a tour. This gives families an opportunity to begin building familiarity before attendance starts. Class teachers also learn about children’s interests and hopes, providing a starting point for those relationships.
Additional needs are supported through the academy’s SENCO and class teams. The school uses a cycle of assessment, planning, action and review, with Pupil Profile plans setting individual targets for children on its special needs register. Parents of children with special needs have progress meetings each half term, giving them a regular opportunity to contribute to decisions about support.
Physical access matters too. The academy occupies a single-storey building, with wheelchair access at every entrance and exit, accessible classrooms and a disabled bathroom in the main building. For medical care, first-aid-trained staff are available during the day; administering medicines requires parents to complete a care plan with the medical officer.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer an attendance-based priority. Families must make a separate application through Bristol City Council’s Common Application Form, meeting the deadline for their child’s entry year.
For the 2027/2028 entry cycle, oversubscription priorities cover looked-after and previously looked-after children, siblings and distance from home, after children with an Education, Health and Care plan naming the school. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as two separate decisions.
The 15-hour offer covers 38 weeks of the year. Its attendance choices are Monday and Tuesday plus Wednesday morning, or Wednesday afternoon plus Thursday and Friday. Eligible working families can take the funded 30-hour offer, with daily hours of 8.30am to 3pm.
Extra morning, afternoon and full-day sessions are charged separately, booked ahead and paid through the payment app. Contact the school for current charges. This gives families a way to add sessions while keeping the booking requirement clear.
