Nursery at St Anne's Infant School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Sun Class has a building of its own and a day organised around play, conversation and small-group gatherings. St Anne's Infant School's nursery in Brislington, Bristol, occupies a bright space built specifically for early learning, with children able to move between inside and outside throughout the day.

The provision has 52 part-time-equivalent places, with no more than 26 children present together. Children usually start in September following their third birthday. An early years qualified teacher works alongside a support assistant qualified at Level 3, giving the nursery a teaching and support structure within the infant school. Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 10 and 11 January 2023; this covers early years within the school rather than a separate nursery judgement.

The Nursery Day

Nest Time gives the day its rhythm. A greeting and small-group activity precede a longer period of supported play; later gatherings bring children together for number work, singing, movement or yoga. Lunch separates the morning and afternoon learning periods. Stories and reflection also feature in the routine.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning and development with children's care. Here, adults observe play and plan what a child should try next, while free movement between the indoor space and outdoor provision gives children scope to pursue activities in either setting. Early years mathematics uses games, songs and everyday situations, including role play, so numbers have a practical context.

Language is a clear thread. In January 2023, communication development received emphasis from the start of Nursery, alongside enthusiasm for books. The nursery reading collection includes Jack and the Beanstalk. Early writing experiences include Dough Disco and making letter shapes in materials such as shaving foam or sand, linking movement and hand control with mark making.

Jigsaw provides a named approach to personal, social and health learning from Nursery onwards. Its characters help children discuss feelings and relationships. There was also a school-level improvement requirement in January 2023: some wider subjects needed clearer decisions about what children should learn and in what sequence. This should be read alongside the early years judgement, rather than treated as a nursery-only finding.

Care and Support

Settling begins before the full routine. The September 2026 calendar placed nursery home visits before children's first day, while the nursery admissions policy allows phased induction for children taking up remaining places during the year. That can mean shorter attendance initially, giving those children time to adjust.

Tapestry connects home and nursery through photographs and written observations of learning. Parents can add interests, celebrations and activities from home, giving staff another view of the child. Learning questions can go to the class teacher through the office or at the day's end; the SENDCo is also accessible through the office for discussions about additional needs.

Children have lunch in the nursery building. Families can provide a packed lunch or choose a chargeable hot meal once September settling is complete. Hot-meal selections are made through My Child At School by Thursday's end for the next week. Packed lunches should be nut-free, with neither sweets nor chocolate bars; children's water bottles serve at lunch and during the day.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and does not appear among the school's listed Reception priority criteria. Those criteria concern care status, siblings and distance from home. Familiarity with the school therefore needs to sit separately from the admissions decision.

Families must make a separate application through Bristol City Council at www.bristol.gov.uk/schooladmissions. The school gives an application window from September until mid-January each year. Put that application in the family calendar even if your child already attends Sun Class.

Practical Information

Attendance is term-time only. The 15-hour entitlement follows one of two patterns: Monday and Tuesday, 08:45 to 15:00, plus Wednesday, 08:45 to 11:15; or Wednesday, 12:30 to 15:00, followed by Thursday and Friday, 08:45 to 15:00. Eligible families taking the 30-hour entitlement attend Monday to Friday, 08:45 to 15:00.

Chargeable care can extend the day: Breakfast Club runs from 08:00 to 08:40, and Munchkins Childcare provides after-school care from 15:00 to 18:00. Paid top-up attendance depends on spare capacity and is guaranteed only for one long term, with funded places taking precedence. Ask the school for current charges.

Applications use the nursery's online form. Termly open events welcome children, and tours can be arranged through the office on 0117 9031435 or school@stannesinfants.co.uk.

FAQs

The usual intake is September after a child's third birthday. Remaining places may be offered for starts during the year under the nursery admissions policy.

Yes. The 15-hour offer uses a beginning-of-week or end-of-week pattern. Eligible families can take a 30-hour place across Monday to Friday during term time.

No nursery-attendance priority appears in the listed Reception criteria, and attendance does not guarantee a place. Apply separately through Bristol City Council during the September to mid-January application window.

Children eat in the nursery building. A packed lunch must be nut-free and exclude sweets and chocolate bars. Chargeable hot lunches can begin after September settling, with choices made through My Child At School.

Register online for a termly nursery open event, or arrange a tour by calling 0117 9031435 or emailing school@stannesinfants.co.uk. Children are welcome at open events.
