Wellies for muddy play and Forest School give St John's Preschool a practical outdoor thread. Children can join after their third birthday, with the provision forming part of St John's Church of England Primary School at Charlton Park in Keynsham.
This is the school's own preschool. Its Church of England identity provides the wider context, while the preschool has its own uniform, lunch arrangements and opportunities for families to play together before joining.
Outdoor learning includes Forest School sessions and access to an outside area in wet, muddy weather. Named wellies stay at school, so suitable footwear is ready when children need it. Physical activity also has a specific place in the timetable: preschool PE takes place on Wednesday mornings.
The Futura curriculum begins from age three. The school identifies creativity, morality, spirituality and the environment as themes shaping learning. These describe its intended approach rather than a separate preschool teaching scheme.
Music is included within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the framework for early learning. Singing during tidying is one example of how music enters everyday routines; performing, listening and composing also feature in the curriculum's musical approach. Learning therefore includes opportunities to use voices and respond to sound alongside physical activity and outdoor exploration.
Stay and Play gives parents and children time together in the preschool, with games, play and a chance to meet the Early Years team. Sessions last 30 minutes to an hour. That offers a concrete introduction to the setting before a child starts.
Lunch can come from home or be a chargeable hot meal. Choices include pasta, jacket potatoes, vegetarian or meat dishes, with salad-bar items too. Hot lunches are booked through My Child at School (MCAS), by the day before. Ask the school for current charges.
Packed lunches must comply with the school's nut-free rule. Families may send fruit, and children bring a named bottle containing water rather than squash; water fountains allow refills. Spare clothes, including underwear and socks, help with changes during the day. For additional-needs enquiries, families can contact the school's SENDCo through the office.
In July 2024, Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good. That is a dated early-years judgement within the school inspection, rather than a separate rating for the preschool now operating.
A preschool place does not guarantee admission to St John's. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Confirm the current application route and deadline for the relevant intake before applying.
Preschool enquiries can be made using the enquiry form or through the office on 0117 986 3824 or enquiries@stjohnsprimaryschool.org.uk. Stay and Play bookings are taken by telephone during school hours.
Uniform combines a white polo shirt with a royal blue cardigan or sweatshirt, grey bottoms and plain black shoes; a blue gingham summer dress is another option. Logos are optional. Harvem on Keynsham High Street supplies branded items, and the office can help families obtain pre-loved uniform.
Children can join after their third birthday.

Keep named wellies at school for muddy outdoor play and Forest School. Children need a named water bottle; spare clothes are helpful for occasional changes.
