Nursery at The Limes Nursery School

Bread dough, children's own stories and a spacious garden give The Limes its character. Open-ended play shapes the nursery provision: children choose, experiment and practise getting along with others, rather than simply completing adult-set tasks.
On Johnsons Road in Whitehall, Bristol, The Limes sits beside Whitehall Primary School and belongs to Central Bristol Nursery Schools Federation. Its curriculum is planned for children aged two, three and four. This is a nursery school in its own right, so proximity to the primary school should be understood separately from admission to it.
Helicopter Stories, Core Books, Environmental Learning and Bread Making organise the federation's curriculum around experiences children can revisit. Children invent narratives, explore shared books and take part in gardening, composting and recycling. Repetition gives them opportunities to practise skills and extend their vocabulary through something tangible.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) connects learning about language, movement and relationships with early reading, mathematics, creativity and understanding the world. Here, children can reach open-ended resources independently, while adults plan around their interests and observations. Play has a planned learning sequence behind it.
The garden provides room for exploration. Green Room's September 2025 update described children making obstacle courses and walkways following work on the outdoor surface. Inside, Red Room created a zen den for children wanting a quiet pause, and used pictures to show the sequence of daily activities. These are concrete ways to combine active play with a more predictable day.
Ofsted's inspection on 23 May 2023 found that adults developed mathematical understanding through play and supported children to contribute ideas. Early reading support. In May 2023, some staff lacked sufficient phonics knowledge to help the small group ready to identify and write sounds; leaders were asked to ensure every staff member could provide that support. Families should weigh that specific concern alongside the emphasis on books and storytelling.
Key workers connect home and nursery. Tapestry, the online learning diary, shares learning during focus observation weeks, while classroom updates and invitations to stay and play give parents further opportunities to participate. Green Room's September 2025 settling update explained that the first Tapestry observation would introduce the child's keyworker and describe their early adjustment. The update also outlined plans to introduce new children gradually over the following weeks.
Food also appears in practical guidance. That same Green Room update asked families to label lunchboxes and water bottles, and to cut grapes lengthways before including them in packed lunches. Cooking extends beyond lunch: a June 2026 update described the weekly Children's Kitchen slot, with children handling green beans while vegetables grew in the garden.
For special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), concerns are discussed with parents, with referrals where needed to professionals such as a speech therapist or educational psychologist. Families attending The Limes can contact the SENCO at sencolimesn@bristol-schools.uk. The nursery's May 2023 safeguarding arrangements were effective, with staff trained to recognise concerns and pass them on. That provides a dated basis for reassurance about protective procedures.
Attending The Limes does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal school admissions process and meet the deadline for their child's entry year.
For the 2026 intake, the federation directed families to an online application and gave a deadline of 15 January 2026, which has now passed. Its reminder also invited parents to seek help from their keyworker. Being next door to Whitehall Primary School should not be treated as an admissions entitlement.
Term-time places follow fixed patterns. The 15-hour options are weekday mornings, 8:45am to 11:45am, or afternoons, 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Alternatively, families can book Monday and Tuesday full days plus Wednesday morning, or Wednesday afternoon followed by Thursday and Friday full days. Full days run from 8:45am to 3:30pm.
Eligible working families can take a 30-hour pattern of Monday to Thursday full days and Friday morning. Funding also includes eligible two-year-old places and 15 hours from the term after a child's third birthday. Paid places use the same patterns; ad hoc bookings and different session times are excluded. The After School Club runs on weekdays from 3:30pm to 4:15pm and carries a separate charge.
