Coats, wellingtons and songs give Woodlands Nursery its character: small steps towards independence alongside early language learning. For children aged 3 to 4, this is dedicated nursery provision within Woodlands Primary School in Yate, with an Early Years Educators team and support from the wider school.
Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good at the inspection of 25 and 26 January 2024. Its nursery findings highlighted children learning to manage everyday tasks and building communication skills, giving parents concrete examples of what progress looks like at this age.
The day has two teaching sessions, with lunch between them. Children can attend in the morning or afternoon, and both indoor and outdoor experiences form part of the nursery's aims. Learning through play with adults and other children is another stated aim: relationships and learning develop together here.
The school's Million Dreams curriculum starts in Nursery. Oversized Million Dreams Learning Journey books begin as floor books, collecting learning connected to the curriculum's main theme. The school intends these to become a record children can return to, helping them connect new ideas with earlier experiences.
In January 2024, nursery children practised independence by dressing themselves for outdoor activity, including managing coats and wellingtons. Songs and rhymes helped develop the language skills needed before learning to read. These are useful, recognisable foundations for parents: doing more for themselves and becoming more confident communicators. A bird of prey visit also involved Nursery in March 2026, providing a specific example of an experience beyond everyday activities.
A dedicated Key Person forms part of the nursery's stated approach, giving each child an adult responsible for keeping track of their progress. The team includes a qualified teacher with Early Years Professional Status and experience in children's development and learning. Woodlands aims to work closely with parents, linking care and education with what families know about their child.
For additional needs, the school's support structure includes a SEND coordinator and pastoral support. Parents are directed first to their child's teacher with concerns about progress or wellbeing, so discussion can begin with someone involved in daily learning. Across the school, MyChildAtSchool (MCAS) handles most messages and alerts; this gives families a practical communication channel alongside direct conversations.
Attending Woodlands Nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority, using its Common Application Form and naming Woodlands as a preference. The deadline is 15 January in the year of admission. South Gloucestershire County Council coordinates Reception admissions locally; families living elsewhere apply through their own authority.
The nursery is linked with the Reception class and wider primary school. Woodlands aims for those connections to build children's confidence about starting school. Familiarity is useful preparation, but parents should keep that educational connection separate from the application they must make for a place.
Morning sessions run from 8:40am to 11:40am, lunch occupies 11:40am to 12:20pm, and afternoon sessions run from 12:20pm to 3:20pm. Breakfast Club is also offered for nursery children. This gives families session choices around a defined lunch interval.
All parents can access 15 hours of free nursery provision each week, with eligibility determining access to up to 30 hours. Contact the school for current charges.
