Nursery at Gordonbrock Primary School

Drawing, painting and building give Gordonbrock’s youngest children daily opportunities to make things and express ideas. This is the nursery within Gordonbrock Primary School on Amyruth Road, Brockley. Places begin at age three and extend up to the start of the academic year in which a child turns five. Children whose parents have delayed admission to Reception are not allocated nursery places.
Creative work is a regular part of early learning here. Early Years children have daily opportunities for painting, drawing, construction and collage, giving them several ways to explore materials and represent their ideas. Across Early Years and the wider school, art changes focus each term: autumn includes painting and drawing, while spring brings textiles, printing and sculpture. Children encounter different techniques rather than repeating a single kind of activity.
At the November 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that the nursery curriculum gave children carefully planned foundations for later learning, with activities that helped them use new knowledge more confidently. The youngest children made exceptional progress. For parents, the useful distinction is that activities serve a learning purpose as well as keeping children occupied.
The session pattern also shapes the day. Morning and afternoon places each cover three hours; children attending full time stay across lunchtime. The nursery timetable allocates lunch from 11:30am to 12:30pm, giving that part of the day its own scheduled space.
Additional needs are handled through the school’s Inclusion team. The Deputy Head of Inclusion works with the SENDCo and external professionals to organise and review support, while interventions are tailored to the child. That gives families a team route for discussing support rather than relying solely on an individual classroom conversation.
The school’s SEND provision includes communication support such as Makaton and personalised social stories, alongside individual workstations and screens when needed. These are school support options, with allocation dependent on the child’s needs, funding and specialist availability. They should not be read as an automatic package for every nursery child.
Collection takes place at the nursery classroom. Children are released to an adult staff recognise, and families should notify the teacher or office if someone different will collect. This makes changes to the usual handover an explicit parent responsibility.
A nursery place does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority online at www.eadmissions.org.uk, following the deadline for their child’s entry year.
The Reception criteria list care status, medical or social need, siblings, qualifying children of staff and distance. Nursery attendance is not a priority criterion. Choose the nursery for the experience it offers now, and treat the later school application as a separate decision.
For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That deadline belongs to a past entry cycle.
Monday to Friday attendance comes in three patterns: mornings run from 8:45am to 11:45am, afternoons from 12:30pm to 3:30pm, and full-time places from 8:45am to 3:30pm. The funding model offers 15 or 30 hours a week, with eligibility checks required for the 30-hour option.
Nursery enquiries go to nursery@gordonbrock.lewisham.sch.uk. Applications use the school’s downloadable form, which parents complete and return; they can apply after their child’s second birthday.
Amyruth Road, including the main entrance, and Gordonbrock Road have camera-enforced School Streets restrictions during term time. Check the road signs before planning a car journey for collection or drop-off.
