Nursery at Valley Primary School
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
A separate space on the main school site gives Valley Pre-School its own identity. Children aged 2-4 attend a self-contained unit in accommodation designed and adapted for the provision, on Beckenham Lane in Bromley. This is the nursery at Valley Primary School, with Penguins and Sparrows classes, rather than a separate setting away from the school.
Play takes several forms here: construction and role-play sit alongside sand, water, painting and modelling. Books, puzzles and music add quieter or more expressive activities, while science and computer skills also feature. The practical mix gives children different ways to participate, from making something to exploring materials or sharing imaginative play.
Learning works towards the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the framework for this early stage of education. At Valley, that includes early mathematical activities and preparation for reading, alongside pencil skills, cutting and sticking. These are concrete beginnings rather than a timetable of school subjects.
Outdoor activities are part of the programme too. In July 2026, the pre-school's Sports Day was scheduled on the school field, with parents invited to watch. That gives a specific example of the nursery taking part in life on the wider school site.
A qualified Nursery Nurse with the N.N.E.B. qualification leads the pre-school; a school teacher advises on planning the curriculum and assessing learning. The staffing structure therefore combines nursery leadership with input from the main school's teaching team.
Lunch comes from home. Children bring a packed lunch, while Breakfast Club supplies breakfast and After Pre-School supplies a tea-time snack. Parents also provide nappies, wipes and cream, so these care supplies belong on the family's packing list.
For wraparound care, families must share allergies, intolerances and dietary requirements; nuts and nut products are excluded from the food served. Medication requires written parental consent and must follow the setting's medication procedures. These arrangements make sharing care information part of preparing for the extended sessions.
Attending Valley Pre-School does not guarantee a Reception place. A separate application is required through the child's home local authority, using its Common Application Form and naming Valley as a preference. Nursery attendance gives no priority under the 2026/27 arrangements. For that intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026; families applying for a later intake must follow the deadline for their own admissions round.
Transition activities are separate from allocation of places. For the 2026 Reception intake, the programme included two Stay and Play events, giving children time in their new classroom, plus a family picnic on the school field and home visits. Where a child has known additional needs or an existing EHCP, the SENCO liaises with their pre-school or nursery and may visit them there. That information sharing helps prepare the next setting for the child.
Core sessions run during term time: a full day is 9am-3pm, mornings are 9am-noon and afternoons noon-3pm, each across five days. Families can also book Breakfast Club from 7.45am-9am, an extra hour from 3pm-4pm, and After Pre-School from 4pm-6pm.
Eligible families can use 15 or 30 hours of government funding towards the core hours, covering them partly or fully. Unfunded core hours and hours outside that period are charged. Meals and consumables are outside funded hours; optional extras can be declined while children retain their funded hours. Ask the school for current charges. Fees are invoiced half-termly in advance, covering 6-8 weeks at a time.
Wraparound sessions require booking half-termly ahead and are allocated in booking order, subject to places and staffing ratios. Email pre-school@valley.bromley.sch.uk for those bookings. General nursery enquiries go to preschool@valley.bromley.sch.uk or 020 8460 1121.
Collection from wraparound care requires an authorised adult to sign the child out. Tell staff if someone different will collect; identification and confirmation of the collection password may be requested. Build those checks into arrangements with relatives or other carers.
