Language comes first at Rangefield. The school’s nursery forms the opening part of its Early Years Foundation Stage, taking children from age three before Reception. Ofsted’s June 2022 inspection found that high-quality exchanges between adults and children support learning from the start, while the early-years curriculum was judged broad and interesting. That makes talk, listening and purposeful interaction central to the provision rather than an add-on.
This is a school-attached nursery within a mixed community primary for ages three to 11. It shares the school’s curriculum planning and support systems, but nursery admission remains distinct from admission to Reception.
The clearest published picture of nursery learning is built around sounds and language. Children learn rhyming words, listen for sounds in words and in their surroundings, and combine sounds to say words. These are practical foundations for later reading: children first learn to hear and manipulate language, then build formal phonics knowledge in Reception.
Mathematical development also begins in the early years, within a curriculum whose content has been planned in sequence. For parents, the important point is continuity of learning rather than an early push into formal schoolwork.
Rangefield’s inclusion arrangements extend across the school. The 2022 inspection found that staff adapt activities and use specialist resources so children with SEND can take part in the same curriculum, with extra sessions available where help is needed. Inspectors also found that adults know pupils and their families well and pay close attention to well-being.
Safeguarding arrangements are effective. Staff receive current training, record and monitor small concerns, and work with wider support services when families need help. This creates a joined-up route for concerns rather than leaving support to a single classroom.
Families must make a separate Reception application through their home local council, including when applying to a school in another council area. Check the published admission arrangements for the relevant Reception year before applying.
The learning transition is more direct than the admissions process. Leaders plan early-years learning around the knowledge and skills children need for Year 1, with nursery sound work preparing children for the phonics they begin in Reception. That curriculum connection is useful, but it is not an admissions advantage.
