Nursery at Meadows First School

An outdoor classroom extends the play space for Ducklings, Meadows First School’s nursery class for children aged 3 to 4. Exploring nature is part of the nursery’s character: indoor play continues outside, with Forest School alongside it. The nursery aims to build curiosity and independence through play.
Within the school in Bromsgrove, the pre-school nursery offers 29 places, with morning, afternoon and full-day options. That gives families a choice of session lengths within a school setting.
Play shapes the learning here. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework, with seven learning areas brought together through activities rather than a timetable of separate subjects. Adults plan indoor and outdoor experiences, then incorporate children’s interests. Children have opportunities to pursue their own ideas, while adult-led activities help them take the next steps in learning.
Choice has a practical place in the day. Children explore voting through role play and choosing a book for the day’s final reading. Discussions about different beliefs and opinions introduce respect in language young children can use. These are small decisions with a clear purpose: practising how to express a preference and listen to someone else’s.
The outdoor classroom connects with indoor play, and early years children have free-flow access outside. Forest School sessions take place weekly, providing opportunities to explore and try manageable challenges. Nursery themes include Machines, Marvellous Me and Fantasy Fun, giving play different starting points across the year.
Creative experiences also reach Ducklings. An annual resident artist works with children across the school, including the nursery, on collaborative artwork. This gives younger children a part in a shared creative project.
For September 2026 starters, the planned settling arrangements included invitations to summer after-school stay-and-play sessions once places had been allocated. These were intended to introduce children to the nursery classroom and teachers, with small transition groups also planned. The aim was familiarity before the first nursery days.
Fruit is provided for nursery children, who can help themselves to fruit and their milk or water during the morning. Children staying for lunch have a break from 12:00 to 12:45. BAM provides the school’s lunchtime service, with payments handled through ParentPay.
Additional-needs support sits within the school’s SEND structure. The school aims to remove obstacles to learning through individual support and work with families and external agencies. Parents can contact the SEND team at senteam@meadows.worcs.sch.uk, giving them a direct route for discussing their child’s needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Meadows. Parents must make a separate application through the local authority. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two distinct decisions.
For Worcestershire residents, the normal application route is online through Worcestershire school admissions, with a closing date of 15th January. Families living outside Worcestershire apply through their home local authority, which passes the application to Worcestershire. Familiarity with the school does not replace that application.
Morning sessions run from 09:00 to 12:00; afternoons run from 12:00 to 15:00. Children can also stay all day. Flexible arrangements allow some children to begin at 08:30 and finish at 15:30. These are options to match against the family’s working day.
The nursery offers 30 hour funded placements. Applications and nursery enquiries go through the school office on 01527 872508 or office@meadows.worcs.sch.uk. School visits can be arranged with the office before applying.
School uniform is expected, but a school logo is optional. For children doing Forest School, named wellies stay at school; parents provide a warm coat and separate waterproof trousers and jacket. Outdoor learning therefore needs a little preparation at home.
