Nursery at Wormley CofE Primary School

Mud kitchens, trikes and a weekly Forest School session give Wormley's nursery a clear outdoor thread. Children aged 3 and 4 attend the school's own nursery, which operates under the school's registration. It is distinct from Wormley Preschool, another setting within the grounds.
The nursery sits within the Early Years and Key Stage 1 part of the school. Shared spaces include a library, a hall and a computer area. In Ofsted's April 2026 inspection, early years reached the Strong standard judgement. That judgement covers the early years provision within the school.
Play provides the starting point for learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together language, movement and social development with early reading, maths, creative work and understanding the world. Children explore their own ideas, while adults also plan activities and help them extend their thinking.
Outdoors, sand pits, climbing equipment and opportunities for painting and building give children different ways to experiment. Forest School takes place each week for nursery children. Exploring nature and learning to consider risks make this more than a change of scenery: children practise making decisions as well as moving and handling materials.
Mathematics uses White Rose Early Years materials. Children explore numbers 1–5, connect counting with quantities and recognise small groups of objects at sight. They also compare amounts and create patterns using colour, size or shape. Practical play and activities guided by adults let children revisit these ideas in different ways.
Language receives deliberate attention. In April 2026, early years teaching used vocabulary selected for individual activities and days, with questioning that developed children's responses. Adults also demonstrated how to interact positively with others. The emphasis gives children practice in expressing ideas and taking part in group learning.
A key person works with each family to understand their child's interests and care needs, and helps the child settle. Early years routines were well established in April 2026, helping children become comfortable quickly. Nursery staff also worked with parents on toileting so that children received consistent support at home and school.
Tapestry provides a shared record of children's learning. Families can add their own observations, giving staff a fuller picture of what a child enjoys and can do beyond the classroom. Early years staff have childcare qualifications and undertake further training in care and education.
Emerging needs are identified promptly, with parents involved and additional support checked carefully in early years. For families seeking help with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the SENCo team can be contacted at senco@wormleyprimary.co.uk.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Hertfordshire County Council's normal admissions process and meet the deadline for their child's entry year. Nursery applications are handled directly by the school, so the two routes need separate attention.
For children with SEND moving between classes, support can include transition booklets, extra classroom visits and meetings involving parents, the SENCo and both teachers. These arrangements help prepare the child for change; they are separate from the allocation of a school place.
Three session choices shape the childcare decision: mornings run from 9am to noon, afternoons from 12:15pm to 3:15pm, and the all-day session from 9am to 3pm. The afternoon session finishes later than the all-day option, a useful distinction when planning collection.
All 3 and 4 year olds have a funded entitlement of 15 hours each week over 38 weeks. Families meeting the eligibility criteria may receive 30 hours, and must supply their childcare code to the nursery. Additional hours can also be purchased by families who do not qualify for the extended entitlement. Contact the school for current charges.
