At a Glance

Toy lorries, counting songs and new words give Berrow’s nursery its clearest character: everyday play becomes a chance to learn. Little Learners Preschool is the nursery provision at Berrow Primary Church Academy on Rugosa Drive, taking children from two years old under the school’s registration. It is part of the school, rather than a separately registered nursery.

The early years judgement in the Ofsted inspection published on 28 April 2026 was Expected standard. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision; it is not a separate nursery rating. For parents, the useful detail is how learning and care combine, especially for the youngest children beginning school life.

The Nursery Day

Language has a clear place in the day. Songs, rhymes and stories help children add to their vocabulary, while adults develop conversations through play. Filling toy lorries, for example, gives nursery children a practical reason to use words such as full and empty. The activity makes an idea tangible before asking a child to explain it.

Counting also comes through singing. Nursery children use songs to develop their understanding of number, so early mathematics includes something they can join in with aloud. These are small, concrete learning experiences rather than an emphasis solely on formal tasks.

Across the early years, activities cover seven areas of learning within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). In parent terms, learning extends across different aspects of a child’s development, with activities planned to build on their starting point. Conversations with staff generally help children develop their understanding and language during play.

Little Learners has its own preschool room. That room also accommodates the school’s after-school club, with secure entry operating after school hours. This is a physical connection between the preschool space and the wider school’s daily life.

Care and Support

The inspection published on 28 April 2026 found that predictable routines and warm relationships helped early years children feel secure. Support for new two-year-olds helped them settle into school life. For a child starting nursery, that combination matters: familiarity with adults and routines supports the adjustment alongside the learning activities.

Families and external professionals contribute to staff’s understanding of children. Work to identify additional needs begins before children enter the early years, involving parents, carers and preschool settings. This gives support a starting point before attendance begins, rather than waiting for difficulties to emerge in the classroom.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal school admissions route and meet the deadline for their child’s entry year. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.

Work with families and professionals supports children’s transition into the setting. That care is distinct from the allocation of a school place.
