At a Glance

Story votes, self-serving snacks and outdoor play give Grange’s nursery day its character. This is nursery provision attached to Grange School on Shobnall Close in Burton-on-Trent, with a morning Pre-School class for children aged 3–4 and an afternoon timetable labelled for 2–3-year-olds. The two sessions have different rhythms, rather than simply repeating the same activities.

Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at its inspection on 14 and 15 November 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. In November 2023, learning combined children’s interests with planned knowledge and skills, with activities both indoors and outside.

The Nursery Day

The morning begins with children registering themselves and choosing play, including time outdoors. Bags and coats are put away before the group gathers on the grey carpet. Wake up shake up introduces movement, while the register, weather and date bring counting and conversation into the routine. Story of the Week gives the group a shared focus.

Choosing time sits alongside activities led by adults. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach combines direct teaching with organised play opportunities: children practise skills through activities as well as learning with an adult. Phonics, stories and songs follow, then handwashing and a snack children serve themselves. Another outdoor period comes before reflection and songs, yoga or dancing towards home time. Helpful Hedgehog, Learning Lion and Kind Koala feature in Friday reflection, giving children named examples for talking about their day.

Early language and number work have concrete starting points. Phase 1 phonics explores environmental sounds, rhythm and rhyme; Fred Talk supports practising how sounds join into words. Children count votes for their home-time story, linking a choice they care about with number work. Role play and small-world play provide opportunities to invent stories. The afternoon session for younger children also combines choosing time, adult-led activities, nursery rhymes, snacks and outdoor play.

Care and Support

Settling support can be shaped around the child. Before starting, families can make a visit; further support may include extra visits, a meeting with the new teacher or a photo book to take home. Contact with the previous setting helps staff understand a child’s needs before the move.

Stoke Speaks Out is a named nursery intervention. For children with SEND, Personal Learning Plans are reviewed with parents each term, while Classroom Passports record individual adjustments. The school’s sensory room and regulation stations are among the resources children can access when these support their needs. These arrangements give families specific support to discuss, rather than a general promise of inclusion.

Children with ongoing medical needs have individual care plans developed with parents and medical professionals. For everyday communication, families can speak with the class teacher or arrange contact through the office. Nursery children are handed directly to staff in the Nursery playground at drop-off and collection.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through Staffordshire’s coordinated school admissions process by the normal closing date. For 2027–2028 entry, nursery attendance is not an oversubscription priority. Choosing this nursery therefore needs to stand on the nursery experience itself.

Transition support is a separate matter. When children move between classes, staff share assessments and information in structured meetings, with additional visits arranged where needed. This helps prepare a child for a change of adults and routines; it does not change admission entitlement.

Practical Information

Morning Pre-School runs from 8.30am to 11.30am. The afternoon nursery timetable begins at 12.30pm and includes home-time periods alongside outdoor and indoor choices later in the session.

To enquire or arrange a visit, contact the school office on 01283 564325 or email office@grangeschool.academy. The car park closes at the start and end of the school day, so families should plan collection and drop-off around that restriction.
