A snack table children can return to, play alongside adult-led learning, and a choice of morning or afternoon sessions give Lift Anglesey’s nursery its shape. This is the school’s own early-years provision on Clarence Street in Burton-on-Trent. Children can join from the term following their third birthday, taking their first steps into school through exploration, conversation and growing independence.
Play is a route into learning here. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the framework covering early learning and care, combines emotional development, communication and physical skills with the beginnings of literacy and mathematics. Children explore patterns, shapes and numbers, encounter the world through culture and technology, and express ideas through imaginative play, music and art. Activities led by adults sit alongside opportunities children pursue independently, giving them both guidance and room to choose.
Speaking and listening come first in nursery phonics. Stage 1 develops those skills; children due to move to Reception the next academic year begin Stage 2 during the spring term. That gives the preparation a clear sequence, rather than treating early reading as an isolated task.
In February 2025, early-years teaching placed emphasis on foundational English and mathematics, with skilled staff helping children and establishing routines promptly. Familiar routines support the learning as well as the practical rhythm of a session.
Settling starts with cooperation between families and the nursery team. Staff work with parents to help children become comfortable, and regular contact supports discussion of their needs and progress. Comfortable clothes, footwear children can manage themselves and a spare outfit on their peg make independence practical.
Milk, crackers, fruit and water are accessible at the snack table during the day. For children attending full time, lunch can be brought from home or prepared at school from a seasonal menu. Families should tell the school about allergies or dietary requirements so arrangements can be made. A water bottle gives children another way to keep a drink accessible.
Security has concrete routines: entrances and gates are kept secure during sessions, play and learning are supervised, and two staff members are present when children leave. Staff receive safeguarding training.
For additional needs, the school’s SEND coordinator can be contacted through the office. Across the school, support involves parents and specialist services. Physical access includes ground-floor ramps, a lift serving the Lower Hall and first floor, and accessible toilets on both floors, with an adjustable changing table in one. These are practical features for families whose children need help with mobility or personal care.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process, using the Common Application Form administered by their home local authority under Staffordshire’s coordinated arrangements. Plan for that application separately from the nursery place: joining the nursery is not a promise of the next school place.
Morning sessions run from 08:30 to 11:30; afternoons run from 12:15 to 15:15. These are distinct options for organising the nursery day. The nursery accepts 15-hour and 30-hour government funding for children who have reached their third birthday. Families using 30 hours pay for lunchtime care, which includes supervision and a hot meal. Contact the school for current charges.
Applications are accepted throughout the year, with children starting when a place becomes free and a waiting list used when the nursery is full. Request a Nursery Admissions Form and return it to the main office. The office also handles enquiries about availability and arranging a visit: call 01283 563811 or email contactus@liftanglesey.org.
Uniform is encouraged for nursery children. Simple clothing and manageable fastenings suit the emphasis on doing things independently; keep a change of clothes on the child’s peg.
