Five mornings a week, a qualified teacher and Forest School for every child give Shobnall's nursery a clear character: a regular introduction to school life with outdoor learning included. This is the nursery class within Shobnall Primary & Nursery School in Burton-on-Trent. Entry is for children who are three by 31 August before the September start.
The nursery has 26 part-time children, forming a class of its own within the primary school. Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 6 and 7 December 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school.
Mornings run from 8.45am to 11.45am, Monday to Friday. The five-day pattern gives children a repeated routine across the week, rather than a choice of occasional sessions. A qualified teacher leads the nursery, with the EYFS curriculum providing its educational focus.
Early reading begins with listening. In December 2023, nursery children were learning to recognise differences between sounds, with language given a substantial place in their learning environment. This provides a foundation for later phonics: the first steps involve hearing and distinguishing sounds before formal reading instruction builds on them.
Forest School adds an outdoor strand for all nursery children. The school has a Forest School area, so outdoor learning has a physical setting as well as a named approach. For families, the combination is distinctive: teacher-led early education includes both language development and access to learning outdoors.
Inclusion is a school-wide aim. Shobnall aims to make learning accessible through reasonable adjustments and to involve children with special educational needs and disabilities in activities alongside their peers. Its aims also include consulting health and social care professionals when supporting medical conditions.
Parents' views form part of that approach. The school aims to seek and respond to family feedback, giving parents a role in discussions about support rather than treating learning needs as a classroom matter alone.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery applications go directly to Shobnall; families must make a separate Reception application through the normal school admissions route.
For September 2027 entry, applications can be made online through Staffordshire from 1 November 2026 to 15 January 2027. Outcomes follow on 16 April 2027. Keep that application separate from nursery registration: being enrolled in the nursery does not remove the need to apply again.
The booking pattern is term time only, with a minimum of 15 hours across five days. Provision includes 15 hours of universal funding. This suits families seeking a consistent morning routine; afternoon childcare needs a separate arrangement.
Wraparound care is available from 7.30am, and other local childcare providers can collect children from nursery if needed. That collection option may help families connect the morning session with childcare elsewhere.
