Carle class gives Samuel Allsopp’s youngest children a refurbished nursery base, with morning and afternoon sessions and a lunchtime arrangement for children staying all day. This is the school’s own nursery provision in Burton-upon-Trent, within a school educating children from age three.
Care and learning present a mixed picture. At the Ofsted inspection on 10 and 11 December 2024 and 29 January 2025, early years provision was graded Requires improvement. Children settled comfortably and developed independence, but teaching beyond early reading and mathematics needed further work. Families should weigh both sides of that picture.
The morning runs from 8:45am to 11:45am; afternoon children attend from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. For those staying all day, lunch occupies the interval from 11:45am to 12:30pm. The two session patterns give families distinct starting and collection points rather than a single compulsory full day.
Learning sits within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). In practical terms, the early-years findings describe children building number recognition and mathematical knowledge, alongside learning to cooperate and do things independently. The organisation of the learning space supported these social and practical skills. Those foundations matter alongside the academic content.
Computing includes Nursery within an approach using Kapow schemes alongside the EYFS and National Curriculum. Carle class has been refurbished, and a new EYFS outdoor area has been announced. That announcement should be treated as a planned addition rather than an established part of the daily routine.
Teaching consistency. At the December 2024 and January 2025 inspection, early-years teaching and curriculum beyond mathematics and early reading were newly introduced. Some staff needed additional help with teaching vocabulary and essential knowledge. Preparation for the next stage was uneven, making the consistency of everyday teaching a significant consideration for families.
Settling was a positive feature of early years at that inspection. Predictable routines and supportive adults helped children adjust to school life, while the learning environment encouraged cooperation and independence. This gives the care picture substance: children were becoming comfortable with the routines around them.
The team includes an Early Years Lead and a Nursery Teacher. A school special educational needs coordinator can be contacted on 01283 247420, option 3, or at SENCO@samuelallsopp.staffs.sch.uk.
At the lower site, meals are cooked daily, with vegetarian choices and halal meat. ParentPay is used to reserve meals. Nursery children staying all day have a designated lunch period, so lunch and supervision form part of the practical arrangements for a longer day.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must submit a separate application, including those whose child already attends the nursery or whose older child attends the school.
For September 2027 entry, applications open on 1 November 2026 and close on 15 January 2027. Apply through the Staffordshire County Council admissions route and Citizen Portal. Treat that application as a separate task from arranging nursery attendance.
