Morning sessions with lunch and full days extending to 18:00 give Culford's nursery provision a clear practical character: several choices of session length. Culford Nursery serves children aged 1 to 3, while Pre-Reception caters for ages 3 to 4. These are the school's own nursery stages, within Culford School near Bury St Edmunds.
Hands-on exploration gives the early years foundation stage (EYFS) its shape here. Children learn through trying things, with adults offering encouragement as they build confidence. During the ISI inspection of 30 April to 2 May 2024, outdoor activities included climbing structures and obstacle courses, with adults supervising children as they experimented and took manageable risks. Physical challenges become opportunities to experience achievement.
The curriculum supports emotional and social development alongside children's wider development. In April and May 2024, provision was adapted to children's needs, and the early years and pre-prep children were developing well. For parents, that means progress encompasses confidence and relationships as well as learning.
Indoor accommodation and resources were assessed positively at that visit. Outdoors, the emphasis on exploration gives children scope to test their abilities, with adult support close by. This is learning through doing.
Before starting nursery, parents and their child are invited to a session together. That gives the family an opportunity to experience the setting before the regular nursery routine begins, rather than making the first booked day their first experience of a session.
Early years care was safe and children were supervised well in April and May 2024. Staff qualifications were assessed positively; throughout the pre-prep site, staff had training in paediatric first aid and food hygiene. Those are useful practical foundations for caring for young children. ISI also found suitable safeguarding arrangements covering the early years at its April to May 2024 inspection.
Lunch is included in morning sessions for both nursery age groups. Families choosing that pattern therefore have a meal within the booked session.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families should treat Reception as a separate admissions decision and contact Admissions to confirm the process for Reception entry. Culford's Pre-Prep entry involves an informal assessment, during which the child joins an age-matched class for a morning or day. Keep that admissions decision distinct from the nursery experience.
Both age groups have morning sessions from 08:00 to 13:00 and full days from 08:00 to 18:00. For children aged 1 to 3, the afternoon runs from 13:00 to 18:00; a School Day option finishes at 15:50. Pre-Reception afternoons end at 15:50. The different afternoon lengths matter when matching collection to work commitments.
Breakfast Club runs from 07:30 to 08:00. Pre-Reception also has after-school care from 16:00 to 18:00, which must be booked a term ahead to secure a place. Plan that booking early.
Billing differs between the stages: Culford Nursery invoices are issued mid-month, while Pre-Reception is billed termly. Extras such as breakfast club are billed afterwards each term, and late collection incurs a charge. Contact the school for current charges.
