At a Glance

Mud, story packs and the PE Barn give Howard Community Academy’s nursery its character: play in a space of its own, with access to facilities across the school. Children can join from age 3. Based on Beard Road in Bury St Edmunds, the nursery has its own classroom and outdoor area, alongside shared spaces within the school’s early years provision.

Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection on 1 and 2 July 2025. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Play shapes the learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework guides a curriculum that combines activities chosen by children with sessions directed by adults. In practical terms, children explore, try ideas and think through what happens; staff use observations of their interests and existing understanding to plan what comes next.

Inside, construction materials, role play and messy activities sit alongside a story corner. There is room for quieter book sharing as well as making and building. Learning also extends into the school: children use the library for stories, take walks on the field and have active indoor sessions in the PE Barn.

Little Wandle Foundations introduces sounds and oral blending through play. Daily rhyme time includes listening games, syllables and rhyming, while book sharing teaches children to turn pages and discuss pictures. In July 2025, nursery children were beginning their reading learning through rhymes and games. These are early building blocks for reading.

Outside, children can use the outdoor space during the day, with further opportunities during the week in the Early Years Forest Area. Forest Learning follows children’s interests and uses natural materials for investigation and imaginative activity. Tasks include caring for themselves and others, taking responsibility and managing risks safely. Caring is also the nursery’s named focus within the Wellbeing Curriculum.

Care and Support

An Early Years team leads daily sessions. Parents receive learning observations through Tapestry and can contribute examples from home; My Child at School (MCAS) handles school communications. Story or Rhyme packs bring familiar stories and supporting resources home, and parents are invited to half-termly Story and Rhyme Time Sessions. That gives families concrete ways to join in with the nursery’s learning.

Morning children receive fruit and bring a water bottle. Afternoon attendance includes lunch: families can send a packed lunch or purchase an Innovate meal, with hot and cold choices and provision for specific dietary needs. Meals must be booked a week ahead. The school also uses SchoolGrid for meal ordering, so confirm the ordering arrangements when setting up an account.

Toilet training is not an entry requirement. Early Years staff work with families on this skill, allowing children to attend while they are still learning. For SEND concerns, the first conversation is with the class teacher; parents can then arrange contact with the SENDCo through the office. The school uses an assess, plan, do, review cycle to organise and revisit support.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor gives admission priority. A separate application is required through the local authority where the child lives. For September 2027 entry, the closing date is 15 January 2027; Suffolk families can apply through Suffolk County Council’s admissions service.

Shared outdoor provision offers familiarity with the next stage: nursery children use the larger playground and Forest Learning area alongside the Reception class. That is a practical connection between the groups, separate from the allocation of school places.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8.50am to 11.50am; afternoons run from 11.50am to 2.50pm. Combinations of mornings, afternoons and whole days depend on spaces. Funded provision can cover 15 or 30 hours; families should check Suffolk’s funding requirements and code process before applying. Paid additional sessions are subject to space, and an extra 30 minutes permits collection at 3.20pm. Contact the school for current charges.

Dress children for weather and messy play, label belongings and avoid best clothes. Borrowing wellies is possible. To enquire or arrange a nursery visit, contact the office on 01284 766278 or office@howardprimary.org.
