Choosing between indoor play and outdoor learning gives Sebert Wood's nursery its distinctive shape. The September 2020 nursery arrangements describe children moving between the two throughout the day, with outdoor activities connected to their learning indoors. Wellies belong here.
Children can join from age 3 upwards. This is the nursery attached to Sebert Wood Community Primary School on Sebert Road in Bury St Edmunds, with its own Nursery building and access to a playground shared with Reception.
At the inspection on 14 and 15 November 2023, Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good. That judgement covers early years across Nursery and Reception, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the curriculum framework. For a parent, the clearest examples are practical: learning to explain an idea, listen to others and recognise differences through play. In November 2023, adults gave spoken language a clear emphasis across early years. A child sorting toy dinosaurs by size illustrated how play could bring mathematical thinking and conversation together.
Routines also mattered. Nursery and Reception children were learning expectations for school life, with adults modelling what to do. Children enjoyed activities, made friends and played contentedly together. These are useful foundations for joining a group and taking part in learning.
The September 2020 outdoor arrangements gave children a choice of learning indoors or outside. Activities outdoors extended what was happening inside, rather than being confined to a separate play break. Messy activities could leave children muddy despite aprons, so families were asked to supply wellies to stay at school.
In the September 2020 arrangements, each child had a key worker, whatever their attendance pattern. This adult paid attention to the child's wellbeing, learning needs and interests, giving families a particular staff connection. The team included an Early Years Practitioner and teaching assistants. Staff had time for observations and updating Tapestry, linking day-to-day activity with a record of learning.
Lunch can extend the nursery day. Catkins Lunch Club bridges the morning and afternoon sessions, with a school meal available by request or a packed lunch from home. That gives families a way to include a lunch break when arranging a longer stay.
For SEND enquiries, the school's SENDCo can be contacted through the office by email or telephone. This provides a direct starting point for discussing a child's needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application, even when their child already attends this nursery, through Suffolk County Council. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.
Familiar surroundings have a different role. The Nursery/Reception playground is shared, but that physical connection should not be mistaken for an admissions entitlement.
Catkins bookings are made through School Gateway. Term-time after-school childcare also includes nursery children: the Lower After School Club uses the Nursery building and its access to the Nursery/Reception playground. Both school after-school clubs finish at 6.00 pm, offering a later collection option.
Nursery uniform is optional. For enquiries, use the school office on 01284 755211, email admin@sebertwood.co.uk or complete the enquiry form. The office also provides current charges for additional nursery sessions when places remain after the initial session allocation.
