Story time, dance and play indoors and outdoors shape the early years provision at Roskear Primary & Nursery School in Camborne. Crofty Minors Pre-School admits children from their second birthday, alongside Roskear Nursery for three-year-olds. The two groups have different capacities: 24 children per morning or afternoon session in pre-school and 30 in nursery. This is the school's own provision, with nursery and pre-school leads handling bookings.
Play takes several forms here: children explore independently, work in small groups and come together for circle time, stories or dancing. Half-termly topics organise the learning. Indoor and outdoor environments both form part of the day, giving children opportunities to practise movement as well as communication.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) starts with the everyday skills young children need: expressing themselves, building relationships and developing control of their bodies. Practitioners give children opportunities to listen and respond to others, extend their vocabulary and practise both small and larger movements. Literacy, maths, creative expression and understanding the world build on those foundations. The practical emphasis is on using skills through play.
In November 2024, Ofsted identified early years learning spaces that supported vocabulary development, with staff using the environment to strengthen children's language. There was also a writing concern: expectations for early handwriting and letter formation needed raising, so that concentrating on forming letters would interfere less with expressing ideas. Language development and early writing deserve separate attention.
For children staying all day, lunch can come from the school canteen or be brought from home. School meals carry a charge, while children whose families receive additional support may qualify for free school meals through Cornwall Council. Parents supply nappies for children who are toilet training. These are practical details to build into the daily routine.
Additional learning needs are supported through Star Plans, with parents involved in setting and reviewing targets. Reviews take place at least three times a year, giving families regular opportunities to discuss progress and adjust support. Depending on the child's needs, provision can include smaller teaching groups, specialist interventions or outside professionals. Medical needs can be supported by an Individual Healthcare Plan developed with parents, health professionals and the SENDCo.
Attending Roskear's nursery or pre-school does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no admission priority. Families normally apply separately through Cornwall Council, following the normal admissions timetable. Children with an Education, Health and Care Plan follow a separate placement process through Statutory SEN Services. The application window runs between September and January in the school year their child turns four; use the deadline for the relevant admissions round.
For children with SEND, transition support can include extra visits, transition booklets or social stories, and meetings with the next teacher or SENDCo. These arrangements support familiarity and continuity of care. They do not change the admissions process.
Opening hours are 8:45am to 3:30pm, Monday to Friday, during term time. Morning and afternoon sessions last three hours; a full day combines both with a 45-minute lunch period. The 15-hour funded pattern can cover five half-day sessions or two and a half days. Children using the latter pattern incur a lunchtime charge on full days. The 30-hour pattern can cover four full days and one morning or afternoon.
All three- and four-year-olds have a 15-hour entitlement from the term after their third birthday. Eligible working families can access 30 hours over 38 weeks, and some two-year-olds qualify for a separate 15-hour scheme. Eligibility codes must be kept valid where required. Non-funded hours are paid in advance through ParentPay; contact the school for current charges.
Before attendance begins, families complete a booking form with the nursery or pre-school leads and provide a birth certificate or passport. Funded bookings also require an EY2C form. Changes or reductions to sessions require four weeks' written notice and depend on capacity.
