Nursery at Troon Community Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Story Bags bring a piece of Troon’s nursery learning home. Children can borrow them to share stories with their families, connecting early reading with time together beyond the nursery session. This is the school’s own nursery in Troon, Camborne, taking children from two years of age, with both government-funded and paid places.

An EYFS lead and nursery assistants form part of the school team. The provision sits within Troon Community Primary School, so families have access to the school office and its SEND coordinator as well as the nursery staff.

The Nursery Day

Reading gives the nursery day a concrete focus. Read Write Inc. (RWI) provides the foundations for early reading from Nursery onwards, with phonics involving recognising sounds, joining them together and breaking words into sounds. These are the small steps behind learning to read words independently.

The National Literacy Trust partnership adds a family element through the nursery’s loan of Story Bags. Owl Babies and Guess how much I love you also feature in Troon’s reading spine and are shared at story times. Books therefore have a place both in the session and at home.

In October 2022, Ofsted identified explicit vocabulary teaching from the start of Nursery, including for two-year-olds, and the beginning of phonics learning in Nursery. Learning new words gives children more language to use as their learning develops. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the framework for early learning and development, including observing children’s progress and supporting additional needs.

Care and Support

For children needing additional help, Troon uses Assess, Plan, Do, Review: identify the need, plan support, put it into practice and check its effect. Children receiving personalised SEN Support have an Individual Education Plan, reviewed with parents each term. This gives families a regular point at which to discuss targets and changes to support.

The SEND coordinator is a contact for concerns about progress. The school aims to identify needs early, drawing on parents’ views alongside assessments. Specialist advice, including speech and language support, may be sought where needed; external services are limited and their involvement depends on the school needing further help.

School meals are cooked on site through Chartwells. Families with allergy or dietary requirements contact the office and complete a form, giving the catering team information to plan for those needs.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Admissions to Troon School are organised by Cornwall County. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.

Practical Information

Nursery enquiries go through the school office on 01209 714289. Visits can be arranged by appointment.

Wraparound eligibility. Children in their final nursery year may use breakfast or after-school care by prior arrangement, depending on staffing. Breakfast Club runs from 8am to 8.45am; After School Club runs from 3.15pm to 5.30pm Monday to Thursday and until 4.15pm on Friday. This conditional access matters when planning a working day.

Breakfast Club drop-off uses the external hall door. For wraparound collection, staff must be told if someone other than a person named on the registration form will collect the child.
