Stories, songs and conversation give this nursery its clearest character: language matters throughout the learning. Heath Hayes Primary Academy’s nursery caters for 3–4-year-olds and offers 30 full-time places within the primary school in Cannock. Wraparound care is available to nursery children, extending the childcare options beyond the nursery provision itself.
In November 2025, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision to meet the Expected standard. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Communication gets sustained attention. Adults demonstrate clear speech, introduce vocabulary through storytelling and singing, and encourage children to talk. This gives children opportunities to hear language used and try it themselves. For a child developing confidence in speaking, those everyday exchanges are an important part of the learning.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together early learning and children’s care. Its learning areas encompass creativity, understanding the world, mathematics and literacy alongside movement, communication and social development. Here, planned activities sit alongside play, giving children opportunities to revisit learning in different ways. Resources are selected to build specific skills rather than simply occupy children.
Confidence and independence are explicit parts of the nursery provision. Children receive support with emotions and relationships as well as learning, so preparing for school includes becoming more comfortable with other people and more able to manage for themselves. Outdoors, the shared EYFS/KS1 playground has benches for quiet play or a rest, providing a calmer option within the school’s outdoor spaces.
Home visits and parent workshops connect families with staff. These help adults understand what children can already do and the support they need, making parents’ knowledge part of the starting point for nursery learning. The November 2025 early years findings also describe adjustments for disadvantaged children and children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
For families with concerns, the child’s teacher and the school’s SEND coordinator provide routes into support. The school uses a cycle of assessing needs, planning help, putting it into practice and reviewing progress. Parents participate in termly reviews, allowing them to discuss whether the support is working and what should happen next.
Practical care includes provision for nappy changing within the school. Children with medical needs have an Individual Care Plan developed with parents, school staff and the school nurse. Prescribed medication requires parental consent before identified staff administer it. These arrangements give families a defined process for discussing health needs and agreeing care.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer admission priority. Families must make a separate application through Staffordshire County Council. For 2026–2027 entry, the normal application deadline was 15 January.
A familiar school setting and a nursery place are therefore separate from an offer of Reception admission. Choose the nursery for its provision now, and treat the later application as a distinct step.
