Nursery at Pye Green Academy

A home visit before the first nursery session gives Pye Green’s introduction a personal starting point. This is the academy’s nursery in Hednesford, serving children aged three and four in the year before compulsory education. There are approximately 52 part-time places, split into 26 per session; full-time places depend on vacancies after part-time allocation.
Children must have turned three before 1 September in their starting year. Those reaching that birthday during the academic year cannot join. For families, that makes the September start an important planning point.
Early years provision received a Good judgement following Ofsted’s inspection on 27 and 28 September 2022. That judgement covers the academy’s early years provision within the school inspection.
Learning builds from what children already understand. In September 2022, early years staff arranged activities in a considered sequence, helping children become more independent and confident. This gives a useful picture of the learning approach: new activities extend existing knowledge rather than starting afresh each time.
The academy’s curriculum combines opportunities to investigate alongside other children with individual practice. Vocabulary development runs across all year groups, giving language a clear place in learning. Children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) take part in Read, Write Inc. phonics, the named programme used for this aspect of early reading.
Session choice changes the length of the day. Morning and afternoon places each provide a three-hour session, while full-time attendance includes lunchtime. Families can therefore choose between a shorter session and a day that includes a meal break, subject to eligibility and place availability.
Before September, parents meet the EYFS team at an informal summer meeting and receive the paperwork needed for starting. Each child also has a visit at home from the Nursery Team. A summer stay-and-play session lets children spend time in nursery with their parent or carer before attending independently.
These are distinct opportunities to build familiarity. In September 2022, children in early years adjusted to school promptly, with teachers establishing relationships from the start; growing independence followed.
For children attending full-time, a hot lunch is optional and paid for through My Child as School. It is a charged extra to consider alongside the session pattern. Ask the academy for current meal charges.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer priority. Families must make a separate application through Staffordshire Schools admissions. The priority categories cover children in local authority care, qualifying siblings and proximity to the school, rather than nursery attendance.
For the 2027 Reception intake, applications open on 1 November 2026 and close on 15 January 2027. Keep that deadline separate from nursery arrangements: being enrolled here does not replace the Reception application.
Full-time sessions run from 8:45am to 3:15pm. Morning attendance is 8:45am to 11:45am, and afternoons run from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. The booking patterns are fixed; flexible sessions are not offered.
Eligible families can access a 30-hour full-time place or a 15-hour morning or afternoon place. Previously stretched funding at a private setting can create an autumn shortfall requiring a top-up. Families who are ineligible for full funding, or choose not to top up previously stretched hours, can use the 15-hour sessions instead.
