At a Glance

Play, talk and outdoor exploration give Redhill’s youngest children their starting point. Two provisions sit within the school: Redhill Robins Pre-School takes children aged 2 to 4 in a purpose-built setting, while Redhill Nursery has a morning group for 3- and 4-year-olds taught by a qualified teacher. Both operate in term time. The distinction matters when choosing between preschool sessions and a nursery morning with additional care.

Robins has direct access to its outdoor area; the nursery also has outdoor access. These are spaces for learning as well as movement, with Robins using its outdoor area daily.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) takes practical form here: children develop language, movement, relationships and early number skills through play. Adults adjust activities around children’s development and interests. At Robins, children choose and direct their play, with adults joining in to extend it.

Three nursery themes give that exploration a shape. Once Upon a Time brings together storytelling, performance and family celebrations. What a wonderful world! introduces plant care, changing seasons and people who help in the community. Awesome Adventures explores transport and different cultures through imaginative play, dance and music. The nursery aims to adapt these themes to the children taking part.

Talk gets deliberate attention. Children have time to ask questions and converse, while stories introduce vocabulary and opportunities for retelling. Read Write Inc begins in Nursery, introducing listening for sounds and combining them into words. Counting and problem solving happen within play; construction, sensory activities and cooking introduce shape and measurement.

Physical preparation for writing includes Dough Gym for finger control and tyre rolling for body strength. Children also make marks with water and brushes, chalk, sand and glitter. Outdoors, Robins children practise climbing, balancing, jumping and running, bringing movement into their learning day.

At the March 2025 inspection, Ofsted found that early-years activities matched the developmental needs of children aged two, three and four. Children practised counting, explored letters and sounds independently, and learnt cooperation through sharing and turn-taking. These findings concern early years across the school, rather than a separate nursery grade.

Care and Support

A key worker system gives children an adult relationship through which staff get to know their learning needs. The early-years team observes children and adjusts activities accordingly, working with families on learning at home and in the setting. A nursery teacher and an EYFS leader form part of the team, alongside additional early-years staff; the school also has a SENDCo.

At Robins, adults help children recognise and manage emotions through songs, stories and role play. They also support growing independence with hygiene and toilet care. The emphasis is on practising everyday skills alongside learning.

Lunch has its own practical teaching role. Nursery children can have meals prepared fresh in the school’s purpose-built kitchen, with fruit, vegetables and yoghurt among the choices. Meals are offered to nursery children at a reduced charge, and children practise using cutlery with plates and dishes. Families pay for school lunches through ParentPay.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Redhill’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Staffordshire’s local authority manages the school’s admission applications, so choosing nursery and applying for school remain separate decisions.

Preparation for that next step includes developing independence, conversation and emotional regulation. Learning information is passed to the next teacher or setting as children move on, helping the receiving team understand their development. That continuity supports transition; it does not secure admission.

Practical Information

Robins offers mornings from 8:45am to 11:45am, afternoons from 12:15pm to 3:15pm and full days from 8:55am to 3:00pm. A charged extension changes the full-day hours to 8:45am to 3:15pm. Nursery’s morning group can be combined with wraparound care through preschool.

Universal 15-hour and 30-hour funded places are available in Nursery. Robins offers Think 2 and 30-hour funded places. Contact the school on 01543 227140 or office@redhill.set.org to discuss session availability or arrange a visit, and obtain current charges from the school.
