At a Glance

A morning class with a Catholic identity gives St Joseph's nursery its character. Based at Hill Top in Hednesford, it belongs to St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, where the school describes its mission as inspiring children to learn and love with God. Families choosing the nursery are choosing that faith context alongside early learning.

The school became an academy on 31 August 2025 and belongs to St Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Multi-Academy Trust. The nursery remains a class within the primary school.

The Nursery Day

The morning runs from 8.45am to 11.45am during term time. That makes the session a practical consideration for families arranging care around work: collection falls before midday.

Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), using Development Matters to guide planning for the relevant age bracket. In parent language, its seven areas bring together talking and listening, movement, relationships and emotions, early reading and writing, mathematics, creativity and learning about the world. Reading is one part of that picture. Physical, social and communication development also have their own place in the curriculum.

Planning across the early years phase takes account of the knowledge children need before tackling later learning. This gives the curriculum a sequence, rather than treating each learning statement in isolation.

Read, Write, Inc begins in nursery in the summer term. When appropriate, children encounter initial sounds in five-minute sessions. The qualification matters: this is a short introduction to sounds when suitable for the child, rather than a claim that every nursery child follows the same reading timetable.

Care and Support

For children with additional needs, the school's objectives include early identification, adapted work, contact with external agencies and individual education plans where appropriate. It also aims to keep parents regularly informed about progress. These are useful starting points for conversations about how a child's support will be organised.

Communication with families includes emails carrying class curriculum information and school news, alongside text reminders. Texts also cover exceptional closures, such as snow days. Keeping email addresses and mobile numbers up to date with the office helps those messages reach the right adult.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route, rather than treating nursery enrolment as the next school's application.

The route is Staffordshire local authority's online application process. For September 2026 entry, applications ran from 1 November 2025 to 15 January 2026. That deadline has passed; it belongs to that intake and should not be used as a future application deadline.

Practical Information

Morning collection. Nursery operates every morning in term time, finishing at 11.45am. Families need a care arrangement that fits that finish.

Visits can be arranged by appointment through the school office. For enquiries or a visit appointment, telephone 01543 227225 or email office@st-josephs-hednesford.staffs.sch.uk. A visit gives families a concrete next step when deciding whether this morning class suits their child.
