Nursery at Kent College Nursery, Infant and Junior School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Wellies, woodland studies and visits to the school farm give Kent College's youngest school children a day that reaches beyond the classroom. Pre-Reception sits within Kent College Nursery, Infant and Junior School in Harbledown, Canterbury, where children can join from three years old. This is the school's own provision. Garden Cottage Nursery shares the site but has a separate registration.

The ISI inspection of 25 to 27 November 2025 found that early years activities developed children's curiosity, confidence and independence. Those findings cover the school's early years provision together, rather than giving Pre-Reception a separate nursery grade.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) shapes learning and care. In practical terms, the early years experience combines language, early number work, physical development and learning to play with other children. Stories and rhymes sit alongside daily phonics, helping children connect sounds with the beginnings of reading and writing. Singing gives them another way to practise language.

Outdoor learning brings a different kind of concentration. Woodland studies and farm visits give children contact with nature and opportunities to care for animals, while developing movement and hand skills. Music and drama also form part of the early years experience. The variety gives children several ways to participate, rather than making learning depend entirely on sitting and listening.

Small routines matter too. Children practise getting dressed for PE, managing their wellies and putting resources away. These are useful steps towards doing more for themselves. During role play and snack time, adults demonstrate considerate conversation and help children practise sharing turns, responding to instructions and working together.

Care and Support

Settling is planned around the move from home into school, helping children become familiar with routines and feel secure. Early years staff receive training in recognising special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), first aid and safeguarding. In November 2025, staffing ratios in early years were appropriate, and staff understood their safeguarding duties towards the youngest children.

Parents can have brief conversations with staff before or after school, with appointments for longer discussions. Parents' evenings take place in the autumn and spring, and children receive a written report at the end of the academic year. That gives families both everyday contact and scheduled opportunities to discuss development.

Food is prepared on the Junior School premises. Snacks are provided for the youngest pupils, and catering accommodates diets such as gluten-free and lactose-intolerant, with the chef and medical staff working together. Full-day and morning Pre-Reception sessions include lunch; afternoon sessions exclude it.

Risk procedures. In November 2025, occasional failures across the school to understand or follow risk assessment procedures required closer monitoring. Families should weigh this school-wide concern alongside the specific early years care findings.

Moving On to Reception

Pre-Reception attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Confirm Reception progression requirements directly with the school. Families should secure the Reception place rather than assume that nursery attendance settles admission.

Transitions to the next class are carefully planned, helping children establish new routines. That practical preparation is separate from the admissions decision. At the Pre-Reception to Reception transition, withdrawal requires a term's notice or payment of fees in lieu, so families moving elsewhere should plan ahead.

Practical Information

Three Pre-Reception patterns are offered for one to five days per week: a full day from 08:30 to 15:30, a morning from 08:30 to 12:30, or an afternoon from 12:30 to 15:30. Flexible individual sessions are also offered within 07:30 to 18:30, giving families a longer window around the core sessions.

Free Early Education covers 15 hours in afternoon sessions from 12:30 to 15:30, subject to availability, with lunch excluded. For families taking only a free place, the registration fee and deposit are returned within six weeks. Contact the school for current charges.

Visits can be arranged through prepenquiries@kentcollege.co.uk or 01227 762436. Pre-Reception children can also try a session lasting one to one and a half hours, giving them an introduction to normal activities before joining.
