Weekly Beach School, an indoor swimming pool and teachers bringing specialist subjects into the nursery give this provision a distinctly active character. Children can begin in the term they turn two, with full-time and part-time attendance options. The nursery sits within the school's Pre-Prep, based in Junior House, in Broadstairs.
In January 2024, the early-years provision included two Nursery classes. These are school nursery classes, with qualified teachers and access to the wider grounds alongside outdoor space reserved for the youngest children. That combination gives small children their own base while introducing them to school life.
Play shapes the learning. Teachers adapt activities and surroundings to children's interests and developmental needs, rather than expecting everyone to follow an identical path. The Early Years Foundation Stage connects learning with development: social confidence, physical skills and emotional understanding matter alongside the beginnings of reading and number work. In January 2024, early-years activities were matched to children's development and supported good progress.
Junior House provides the base, with toilets integrated into the indoor nursery environment. Outside, children have a dedicated area as well as access to the school's grounds and indoor pool. Beach School happens weekly, extending learning beyond the classroom. Specialist teachers also come into the early-years space for art, French, PE and music, giving children different experiences within familiar surroundings.
Books and practical exploration have a place, too. Across Pre-Prep, teachers read to their classes daily, children select library books, and phonics begins when a child is ready. Mathematics starts with objects children can handle before moving towards pictures and abstract ideas. For younger learners, that makes the first steps in reading and mathematics tangible.
Settling was a strength in January 2024: early-years children adjusted promptly and formed affectionate relationships with staff. Adults helped children learn to share and wait for a turn, making social development part of everyday care. Older pupils also have a role. Nursery children have Prep School buddies for regular reading, shared Beach School visits and Wednesday lunches. Meals and wraparound care are included in the nursery arrangement.
Safeguarding requires the full chronology. In January 2024, weaknesses in referrals to external agencies and risk management meant that safeguarding requirements, including relevant EYFS requirements, were unmet, although early-years supervision was effective. On 6 December 2024, the progress monitoring inspection found that all relevant standards checked were met, including the EYFS safeguarding and welfare requirements examined. Early-years children remained within staff's sight. This later finding concerns the requirements checked on that visit; it is not a nursery quality grade.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Ask the admissions team to confirm the requirements for Reception entry, including any application process and deadline. Familiarity with the school and relationships with older buddies are useful parts of nursery life, but should not be treated as an entitlement to a place.
The nursery day runs from 8am to 6pm, with part-time and full-time places. Up to 15 hours a week of Early Years vouchers are accepted; their use is restricted to 12.30pm to 3.30pm each weekday. That timing matters when matching funded attendance to working hours. Contact the school for current charges.
For an individual tour, submit a visit enquiry for the admissions team to follow up. Nursery uniform has its own list, and the supplier is Billings & Edmonds, Chiswick branch. These are useful practical steps before choosing an attendance pattern.
