The only permanently inhabited island in Essex, Canvey Island sits in the Thames Estuary separated from the south Essex mainland by tidal creeks and connected by road bridges. Growing from agricultural land into Britain's fastest-growing seaside resort between 1911 and 1951, the island of around 38,000 was reshaped by the North Sea flood of 1953, which killed 58 residents and prompted two miles of concrete sea defences.
Canvey Island draws families competing for state primary places within Castle Point, with Lubbins Park and Northwick Park forming the residential pockets closest to the most popular school catchments. Benfleet station connects to London Fenchurch Street in around fifty minutes on the c2c line.
