One of postwar England's largest planned towns, Basildon sits in south Essex between the A127 and A13 corridors, around 27 miles east of central London.
Designated a new town in 1949, it was shaped from former hamlets and farmland to house London overspill; Laindon, one of the oldest settlements absorbed, today remains a competitive corner for families seeking primary places. Lee Chapel North is among the most sought-after pockets for primary catchments in the town, while Wickford, within the wider borough, draws families weighing up their school options. Langdon Hills and Ghyllgrove fill the southern belt. At the 2021 census the built-up area held around 116,000 residents, spread across estates and newer developments south and east of the old village cores. Basildon station on the London, Tilbury and Southend line reaches Fenchurch Street in around 40 minutes.
