Making a choice, expressing a feeling and learning to drink independently are central to the early years day at James Rennie School. This is nursery provision within a special school serving children and young people with severe or profound learning disabilities across North Cumbria, with the school’s age range beginning at 3. Communication gives the provision its distinctive focus: staff establish how children express themselves so that they can take part in everyday decisions.
The school describes its approach as education shaped around each pupil’s needs, abilities and hopes. For families, that places the emphasis on individual development, including the small practical steps that make daily life more manageable.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines communication with practical independence here. Children practise feeding themselves, drinking, dressing and toileting as part of the day. Separate independence sessions include preparing their own cereal. These are concrete learning tasks, giving children opportunities to practise doing things for themselves rather than treating care routines as time apart from education.
Learning also extends into the community. Regular outings include parks, local cafés and walks. Early years activities have included Hardplay at Kong Adventure, along with cycling and sailing at Watchtree. These experiences give children different settings in which to use their communication skills, beyond familiar classroom routines.
In January 2023, inspectors found that early years children encountered selected books, stories and rhymes, and explored working life through play and stories. This gives the day both a language focus and opportunities to begin making sense of the wider world. Green chairs provided a clear snack-time cue: children understood where to sit. That small physical detail shows how a familiar routine can help children understand what happens next.
Understanding a child’s communication comes early. Staff identify the ways pupils communicate so that they can express emotions and make choices from the outset. For a child whose communication needs shape daily care, this makes expressing a preference part of the learning day.
Independence work reaches into personal care as well as activities. Dressing practice, toileting routines and support for independent eating and drinking connect learning with everyday needs. Preparing cereal adds another practical opportunity to take part in a familiar food routine. The emphasis is on practising these skills within the day, with communication alongside them.
