Rhymes and listening for sounds give Buttermere Class its first steps towards reading. This is Newtown Primary School’s nursery provision in Carlisle, within the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The emphasis is on preparing children for later learning, with spoken language and listening carrying real weight.
At the Ofsted inspection on 17 and 18 June 2025, early years provision was graded Good. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Reading begins with ears before printed words. Nursery children practise rhymes and recognising sounds within words, preparing them for the phonics teaching that follows. Newtown uses Read Write Inc Phonics across the school; the nursery’s sound work provides preparation for that programme rather than evidence that every nursery child starts formal reading lessons.
Listening to books is also part of the EYFS reading approach. Children encounter texts read aloud, giving them words and stories to talk about before they can read independently. This places language development alongside preparation for decoding words.
In June 2025, checking children’s understanding extended into early years. Staff used checks to spot gaps, while returning to earlier concepts helped children retain learning. These are useful foundations for a young child: new learning connects with something already encountered.
For families concerned about development, Newtown’s school-wide SEND process starts with the class teacher monitoring progress and discussing concerns with the special educational needs coordinator (SENDCO). Support can include extra intervention or changes to how learning is presented. Parents participate in the process, giving families a role in decisions about their child.
If difficulties continue, a SEND Early Help Assessment can be completed with parents and shared with their consent. An Academic Adventure Plan identifies learning targets, with the SENDCO monitoring support and seeking outside advice where appropriate. Progress conversations include arranged meetings and parents’ evenings. Parents should raise initial concerns with the class teacher; the school office also provides access to the SENDCO.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions process, meeting the deadline for their child’s entry year. Familiarity with the school should therefore be kept separate from the question of securing a place.
For September 2026 entry, the application window ran from 3 September 2025 to 15 January 2026. Routes included Cumberland Council’s Citizen Portal, an emailed application form or a paper application sent to the council. Those dates belong to a past entry cycle.
Preparation also involves everyday independence. Newtown encourages families to practise putting on shoes and coats, managing handwashing and toilet routines, and telling adults what they need. Words, pictures, signs or communication devices can all help. These are suggestions to adapt to the child, rather than a readiness checklist.
