Confidence to try, purposeful activities and learning in small steps characterised Wavell’s early years provision at its July 2022 inspection. The nursery belongs to Wavell Community Primary School in Catterick Garrison, on Wavell Road. This is school-based provision, so the early years findings offer the most relevant picture of learning for parents considering the nursery.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 19 and 20 July 2022. That judgement covered early years within the school. It was not a separate nursery rating, and the findings describe provision at that time.
In July 2022, learning was organised around manageable steps, with activities planned to serve a specific learning purpose. For a parent, that means looking beyond the activity itself to the skill it helps a child practise. The emphasis was on children building their learning gradually, rather than simply completing a task.
Role play gave children opportunities to develop speech, and teachers encouraged them to express ideas in complete sentences. Children sustained their attention and worked together. These are useful foundations for group learning: listening, contributing and staying with an activity all matter alongside what a child knows.
Independence was another clear feature of early years at that time. Children showed willingness to attempt unfamiliar tasks. That confidence matters when learning involves trying something before knowing how to do it.
Language support needed greater consistency, however. Some adults missed chances to extend children’s speech, and the quality of questioning and language modelling varied. Further staff training was required so that children received equally skilled interaction across the adult team. This concern matters because conversation is itself a teaching opportunity, including during play.
The school’s safeguarding arrangements were effective in July 2022. Staff raised concerns, records captured detail, and leaders worked with outside agencies to support vulnerable families. Those are school-wide findings, relevant to the organisation responsible for the nursery’s care.
Information sharing was an important part of that work. Leaders pursued information from appropriate agencies and knew families well despite movement into and out of the school. For parents, the practical significance is continuity of support when family circumstances change: care depends on adults sharing concerns and acting on them, as well as knowing the child.
Attending Wavell’s nursery does not guarantee a place in its Reception class. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline.
Choosing a nursery and securing a school place are separate decisions. A child’s familiarity with the school should therefore be kept distinct from the allocation of a Reception place. Parents should plan for that application as a separate step, even while their child attends the nursery.
