A role-play till, keyboards and phones give everyday technology a place in Manor Court’s nursery learning. The Early Years Centre caters for children aged 2 to 4 at Manor Court Community Primary School in Chard. Exploration is the connecting thread: children investigate materials, make choices and learn about the world around them.
Playing and exploring shape the learning approach. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) connects practical experiences with children’s development: understanding their surroundings, expressing ideas, developing physical skills and learning about themselves and others. Children choose resources for a purpose and investigate tools and materials. That gives their activity a goal as well as room for experimentation.
Technology starts with familiar objects. Phones, keyboards and a till feature in the role-play area, while an interactive whiteboard supports both activities led by adults and children’s ongoing exploration. These experiences introduce what technology does in ordinary life. An online safety focus each half term links safe use to personal, social and emotional development.
Art brings colour, materials and mixed media into early learning, with opportunities to develop the small hand movements involved in making things. Arts activities form part of everyday provision in the Early Years Centre, and parents are invited to small exhibitions. Children can share their creations with their families.
Understanding the world also means asking questions. Geography activities encourage children to investigate patterns and changes, compare what they notice and pursue their own questions. Early history learning draws on familiar people, personal experiences and shared stories to explore how life now compares with the past. These are concrete starting points for ideas that could otherwise feel abstract.
Key workers use EYLog to record observations of children in the Early Years Centre. Every half term, they assess learning across all areas, combining those observations with their professional judgement. Planning and targeted support follow from this, linking the next activities to what children can already do and where they need help.
For families discussing additional needs, the school’s Deputy Headteacher and Inclusion Leader is the contact through the school office. This gives parents a clear route for raising SEND or inclusion questions. The Early Years Centre manager also has a role within the safeguarding team, connecting the nursery’s management with the school’s arrangements for responding to concerns.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through Somerset’s normal admissions process, with a closing date of 15 January each year. Apply through www.somerset.gov.uk/admissions or send a completed paper application to the School Admissions Team at Somerset County Council. Treat this as a separate decision and deadline when planning your child’s next step.
