Nursery at Oaklands School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Forest school and daily number learning give Oaklands nursery two distinct strands: exploring outdoors and beginning the skills needed for classroom learning. Children aged 3 to 4 attend the nursery within Oaklands School in Walderslade. A qualified early years teacher leads the learning, bringing teaching expertise to these first steps in education.

The provision combines indoor activities with opportunities outside, including forest school in the school grounds. For families, that means the nursery day includes both early reading and writing work and learning beyond the classroom.

The Nursery Day

Small groups focus on early literacy, while Being a Mathematician gives children a daily opportunity to develop number skills. These are specific teaching elements within a broader mix of nursery activities, rather than a day built solely around outdoor play.

Read Write Inc (RWI) begins in nursery and runs daily. Phonics teaches the sounds represented by letters; the programme organises learning around children's existing knowledge. Children work with trained adults in small groups, with assessment helping staff match the learning to their stage. That makes the starting point the child's current understanding.

Forest school adds a different setting for learning. Its place in the nursery's activities gives children opportunities to explore outdoors alongside their indoor work. Within the school's first phase, children also practise using taught skills in activities of their own, helping them begin to work more independently.

In July 2023, Ofsted identified nursery number learning as a positive start and highlighted the early years team's ambition for reading and mathematics, including for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). The emphasis is on repeated practice to consolidate those early skills.

Care and Support

For questions about a child, the class teacher is the first contact. Families can also speak with staff at the end-of-day Meet & Greet playground. The school's response commitment is within two working days, giving parents a clear timescale when an immediate conversation is not possible.

An assistant headteacher has responsibility for SEND and inclusion, and the wider inclusion team includes speech and language therapy and home-school support roles. These are school-level resources alongside the nursery's teaching provision.

Children attending for a full day can stay for a charged lunch session. Across the school, meals are prepared on site by Contract Dining company, with a choice of food and a cold drink. Home-packed lunches are another option; nuts are excluded because of severe allergies among children and staff.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.

Practical Information

Morning nursery runs from 09:00 to 12:00; the afternoon runs from 12:15 to 15:15. Sessions can be combined into a full day with the lunch arrangement. Families can choose days and sessions, subject to space, which allows attendance to fit around their weekly commitments.

Eligible families can access a funded 30-hour placement. The lunch session carries an additional charge; contact the school for current charges.

For nursery enquiries, call 01634 333820 or email admissions@thewestbrooktrust.org. School visits can be arranged through the office. The school uniform colours are black, white, grey and red, and clothing does not need a logo or a particular brand.
