Nursery rhymes and songs give early reading its starting point at Cheadle Village Primary School. Repeated sounds and words help children begin the work of learning to read. This is the school's own nursery on Ashfield Road in Cheadle, within a primary school whose intake starts at age three.
The emphasis extends beyond reading. Early years learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with curriculum plans covering subjects such as music, science and art alongside a nursery PE overview.
In February 2023, Ofsted found that early years learning gave children a sound basis for the education ahead. Rhymes and songs were concrete tools for developing early reading. For a young child, that means familiar words and repeated sounds have a learning purpose, rather than singing being simply a break between activities.
The EYFS provides the framework for this stage of learning. Cheadle's curriculum materials include nursery PE planning and early years overviews for geography, design and technology, and music. These give parents a picture of learning that reaches beyond letters and numbers. The school's wider curriculum also takes Cheadle itself as a starting point, connecting learning with the surrounding village.
Physical features across the school include two playgrounds and a garden containing a trim trail and a small astro-turf pitch. These are school facilities. The nursery's learning support also reaches home: a nursery maths leaflet and a family writing booklet sit alongside the parent guide to the EYFS. They give families practical ways to take part in their child's learning.
Early years children understood how to follow routines for safe, purposeful play and learning in February 2023. That matters at this age: knowing what to do helps children take part in the session as well as manage its expectations.
Support for additional needs includes the Foundation Stage. The school's SEND approach involves identifying needs, assessing them and planning support, with children and parents contributing to decisions and reviews. SEN enquiries go through the school office to the SENDCO, giving families a defined contact route.
Food arrangements across the school include packed lunches or school dinners, supplied by Totally Local Company. Parents should tell the teacher or office promptly about food allergies. For prescribed medication, families must sign the necessary office forms before staff can administer it. If a child becomes ill during the day, staff contact parents or carers and arrange collection, so emergency contact details need to stay up to date.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat that application as a distinct step when planning your child's next year.
School tours can be arranged through the office on 0161 4285026. General enquiries can also go to admin@cheadle-pri.stockport.sch.uk. A visit offers families a chance to discuss joining the nursery with the school directly.
Branded school uniform is sold by MONKHOUSE, online and in store at Monkhouse Schoolwear in Cheadle Hulme. For illness-related absence, telephone the school promptly; its infection-control guidance applies to children attending either school or nursery.
