Nursery at Lum Head Primary School

Children’s own choices share the day with activities led by adults at Lum Head’s nursery. That balance gives children room to pursue an interest while taking part in learning planned by the early years team. The provision belongs to Lum Head Primary School on Troutbeck Road in Gatley; the school’s recorded starting age is three.
A nursery teacher appears within the school’s teaching team. This places the provision within the primary school’s staff structure, alongside a school SEND coordinator.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for learning. Lum Head’s early years approach combines activities children choose with those adults direct, with progression planned across seven learning areas. For parents, the practical distinction is between time to follow a child’s curiosity and time when an adult introduces or develops learning. Both belong in the day.
Language has a concrete place in the early years experience. In January 2024, children heard stories and rhymes that helped expand their vocabulary. Listening gives children words they can draw on when talking about their own ideas and experiences. The same inspection evidence describes effective phonics teaching in the early years, with reading books matched to sounds children had learned. These findings concern the school’s early years provision at that date.
There is a curriculum caveat. The January 2024 findings included a school-wide weakness in defining essential knowledge in a few subjects, making lesson planning and checks on understanding harder. This was a school-wide improvement action, rather than a nursery-specific finding.
Established routines helped early years children become familiar with school life promptly in January 2024. Knowing what happens next matters for a young child: familiar classroom expectations give the session a recognisable shape as children adjust to being away from home.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, Lum Head’s inclusion policy rejects discrimination on those grounds and follows Stockport’s admission procedures. The SEND page brings together the Stockport Entitlement Framework, the school’s SEND Information Report 2024-25 and its Accessibility Audit and Plan 2024. These give families specific documents through which to understand the school’s approach to support and access.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline. Lum Head directs parents to Stockport Council’s primary admissions information and Admissions Team. Treat that application as a separate decision from choosing the nursery, rather than assuming that familiarity with the school secures admission.
The school office handles enquiries by telephone on 0161 428 7992, through its contact form or at Admin@lumhead.stockport.sch.uk. Personal school tours can be booked through the office. Ask the office whether the school tour includes the nursery and an opportunity to discuss your child’s needs.
For planning ahead, the school’s term-date page includes the 2026-27 academic year. Use the school’s calendar when arranging family commitments around attendance.
