At the September 2022 inspection, reading began in Meadowbank's Nursery Year, introducing its youngest learners to books and phonics. This is the school's own nursery on Councillor Lane in Cheadle, with a qualified teacher and staff holding level three qualifications working within the Early Years Foundation Stage team.
Children become eligible in the term after their third birthday. For September 2027 entry, the planned nursery admission number is 40. That figure belongs to the future intake, rather than describing the number of children attending now.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines children's learning and development with requirements for their safety and welfare. Planning takes account of individual development, with regular assessment helping adults decide what children should learn next. For parents, this means learning and care belong together, rather than being separate parts of the day.
Early reading has a clear place in that learning. At the September 2022 inspection, Ofsted found that reading started in Nursery and that a consistent early years approach helped children get to know the phonics programme. Books were selected to suit children's phonics knowledge, connecting what they practised with what they read.
There was also a caution about children's broader experiences. In September 2022, some children and pupils had too few opportunities to learn about life beyond school and the local community. Some pupils' understanding of the wider world, including some British values, was underdeveloped. Families should weigh that finding alongside the early reading work.
Settling begins before the first full school days. Foundation Stage staff make home visits before children start, while the EYFS transition arrangements include welcome information and an evening for families to meet the team and explore the learning environment. September starts include opportunities for parents to attend with their child and shorter visits for children alone. An individual transition timetable can be agreed where needed.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), support follows an assessment, planning, action and review cycle. Support plans are discussed with parents each term, and Class Dojo provides another communication route. This gives families a recurring opportunity to help shape support. The school building is on one level, with ramps at doors that have steps and two toilets accessible to wheelchairs, practical features for children with mobility needs.
Nursery attendance gives no priority for Reception and does not guarantee a place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Stockport Council. For entry in September 2027, the closing date is 15 January 2027. Familiarity with Meadowbank does not replace that application.
Transition support is a separate matter. Children have summer sessions with their next class teacher, and current and future teachers discuss their needs. Additional visits or meetings can be arranged for children who need them. These activities support the change of classroom; they confer no admissions advantage.
The attendance patterns introduced in September 2025 divide the week into two blocks. The first covers Monday and Tuesday, 8.50am to 3.20pm, plus Wednesday, 8.50am to noon. The second covers Wednesday, 12.15pm to 3.20pm, plus Thursday and Friday, 8.50am to 3.20pm. Eligible families can instead take five full days, Monday to Friday, 8.50am to 3.20pm.
The universal funded entitlement is up to 15 hours weekly in term time, or 570 hours across the year. Eligible families can receive up to 30 hours weekly in term time, or 1,140 hours annually. Eligibility must be reconfirmed every three months. Eligible families choosing two and a half days may use breakfast and after school clubs on nursery attendance days, subject to availability.
Autumn open days provide an opportunity to visit; other visits can be arranged through the office. Contact admin@meadowbankprimary.com or 0161 428 6286. Parking requires planning: the school sits beside a busy road, and its car parks are reserved for staff and visitors. Park & Stride encourages families to park farther away and walk the final five or ten minutes.
