Nursery at Outwood Primary School

The Oak Tree Room gives Outwood’s nursery a clear base: children register here, join adult-led learning and explore through construction, pretend play and books. Outside, a self-contained learning area extends the possibilities in every season. Physical play has a daily place.
Known as FS1, the nursery belongs to Outwood Primary School on Outwood Road in Heald Green. It sits within the school’s early years provision, with its own collection and drop-off point in the Oak Tree Room. For a child starting school life, that provides a recognisable place around which routines can develop.
Development Matters structures the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. In parent language, this brings together learning to communicate, manage feelings and move confidently with early reading, mathematics, creativity and discovering how the world works. Adult-led work in the Oak Tree Room covers phonics, literacy, number learning and topics; play resources give children other ways to explore those ideas.
Sand, small-world play, vehicles and tracks sit alongside opportunities for drawing, writing and using the hands with increasing control. Children can build, invent a pretend situation or spend time with a book. The Outdoor Classroom adds space for larger-scale exploration, and children use it throughout the year, including in wet weather. Monday PE involves games and activities in small groups, alongside everyday opportunities to move.
Stories also connect learning with shared responsibility. A Summer 1 example uses My Butterfly Bouquet alongside The Very Hungry Caterpillar; The Girl Who Loves Bugs also supports the work with class caterpillars. Teamwork and expressing opinions respectfully give the books a purpose beyond listening to a story. Early years design activities include daily chances to cut, join materials and make projects, giving practical work a regular place.
Contact with the team combines everyday conversations with digital updates. Class Dojo carries children’s portfolios and class stories, and parents can message staff with concerns. Brief conversations are possible at collection or drop-off; a meeting provides time for a longer discussion. The team includes an EYFS lead teacher, an EYFS teacher and a higher level teaching assistant (HLTA).
The school’s meal arrangements include packed lunches or hot meals ordered through School Grid, with vegetarian and halal choices each day and provision for dietary needs. Its SEND support uses the Outwood Provision Pyramids and Stockport Entitlement Framework. Parents can reach the SENCO through their child’s class teacher or the office, providing a route to discuss individual learning needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Stockport Local Authority handles school admissions, so choosing FS1 and applying for Reception are separate decisions.
Collection and drop-off take place at the Oak Tree Room. Send a labelled water bottle, which staff can refill, and leave labelled wellies in the cloakroom. Clothing suited to the weather matters because outdoor learning continues in all conditions.
To enquire or arrange a personalised school tour, contact the office on 0161 4371715 or email admin@outwood.stockport.sch.uk. The school offers individual visits by appointment. For current meal charges, contact the school.
