Choosing indoors or outdoors for much of a session gives Tokyo nursery its character. This is Prospect Vale Primary School’s own nursery class in Heald Green, Cheadle, with learning organised around play, exploration and children’s interests. The nursery teaching team works alongside learning support. For families, the emphasis is on children trying things for themselves, with several different spaces and activities to choose from.
Sand, water, construction and role play give children practical starting points for learning. Reading spaces and opportunities to make marks sit alongside them, so early literacy is part of the play environment rather than confined to books. Children can choose between outdoor and indoor learning during most sessions. That choice gives an active child room to explore while allowing another to continue an activity inside.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the curriculum framework; here, its practical expression is learning through play and exploration. Topics begin with All About Me in autumn, move to Me and My Family in spring, and finish with Me and My Special Places in summer. These familiar starting points connect learning to children’s own experiences.
At the July 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that early-years children began reading positively, with nursery songs and rhymes preparing them for phonics. Families also have a regular book routine: Wednesday is the change day, beginning after October half term. PE takes place on Monday afternoons and Wednesday mornings, adding planned movement to the play-based sessions.
Tapestry connects home and nursery through observations and suggested activities. Parents can arrange a conversation with the team through the office, and EYFS staff help with account access. This gives families both a digital record and a route to discuss concerns directly.
In July 2023, early-years children settled promptly and paid close attention to adults. Communication needs attention. The same inspection identified inconsistent communication across the school, with some parents feeling insufficiently informed. Families should make use of the nursery’s appointment route as well as Tapestry.
For additional needs, the school’s support arrangements include small-group work and interventions where needed. Parents participate in planning, with professionals meeting to review progress. The school also works with the Ethnic Diversity Service to support children learning English as an additional language.
Aspens prepares the school’s meals on site each day. Orders and payments use the Swift Kitchen App, and the office handles dietary questions. This provides a practical route for discussing food requirements before ordering.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal school-place application route. The school provides distinct links for primary and maintained nursery applications, so the two processes should be treated separately.
For the past 2026 primary admissions cycle, the listed closing date was 15 January 2026. That date should not be used for a later intake.
School tours usually run on Tuesdays at 9:15am, with alternative arrangements possible. Book through schooladmin@prospectvale.stockport.sch.uk. Nursery applications use the Apply for a Maintained Nursery Place link on the admissions page.
