At a Glance

Choice shapes the nursery experience at Thorn Grove: children select classroom resources for themselves, spend time learning outdoors and join an adult for small-group work each day. That gives the provision a clear balance between following a child's interests and teaching with adult guidance.

The Nursery class, called FS1, serves children aged 3 to 4 within the school's Foundation Stage. The nursery unit accommodates up to 44 children through its two-and-a-half-day pattern. Entry is considered from the term following a child's third birthday. For families, this is an introduction to school life with a distinct nursery timetable.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning, development and care together. Here, play supplies the context for learning, while books and stories help shape topic work. Children's interests and individual needs influence the early years curriculum, so exploration has a place alongside planned teaching.

Classrooms contain continuous provision areas: spaces arranged for particular learning purposes, with resources children can choose independently or use with adult help. Daily teaching in small groups adds guided work to those choices. The practical consequence is a day that includes both making decisions and working alongside an adult.

Outdoor learning gives children room to move, investigate and explore. Resources are planned to provide challenges at different levels, allowing children to tackle activities according to their starting points. Think Equal supplies the EYFS resources for personal, social and emotional learning, bringing relationships and feelings into the learning programme.

In July 2024, Ofsted found that sharing and turn-taking were established from early years, and that considerate behaviour began in Nursery. The same inspection identified unfinished curriculum planning in one or two subjects across the school, within a curriculum extending from Nursery onwards. Curriculum planning. Some subject content needed clearer sequencing, a relevant consideration alongside the nursery's play and guided learning provision.

Care and Support

An EYFS leader teaches the nursery class and holds NPQML and NPQEYL qualifications; a nursery teaching assistant is also listed in the team. Early years transition includes Stay and Play sessions, giving families opportunities to meet teachers and other parents before the next stage begins.

Home achievements can be shared through Wow slips. Learning together mornings take place weekly, and coffee mornings each term bring parents together for EYFS updates. Tapestry is used specifically for early years communication, alongside the school's other communication routes. These give parents several ways to contribute to their child's learning rather than relying only on formal meetings.

For concerns about special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the class teacher is the first contact. Support can include visual cues and teaching individually or in small groups. Parents help plan provision and review progress each term, giving families a continuing role in decisions about additional help.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Stockport Council's school admissions route and meet the normal Reception application deadline. Treat the nursery choice and the school-place application as separate decisions.

The annual Family picnic brings EYFS families together as part of the move between Nursery and Reception. Stay and Play sessions also support early years transition. These activities help children and parents become familiar with the next stage; they do not secure admission.

Practical Information

The two-and-a-half-day options group Monday and Tuesday with Wednesday morning, or Wednesday afternoon with Thursday and Friday. A limited number of full-time places are offered to families eligible for 30-hour funding. Session pattern. The grouped days give families a defined weekly arrangement, so consider which half of the week fits your childcare needs.

Nursery applications go through Stockport MBC's website. School tours can be booked by calling 0161 485 1177 or emailing admin@tgps.uk, and take approximately 30 minutes.

Uniform is compulsory in Nursery, although logos are optional. Nursery children may wear black tracksuit bottoms and should have black shoes or trainers with no laces. Second-hand uniform is offered onsite. Foundation Stage handovers take place on the playground; alternative collection arrangements made through the office use a password to identify the authorised carer.
