Paint and freely available drawing tools give Little Gems a practical starting point for early writing. This is Pyrcroft Grange Primary School’s nursery, taking children from two years old within the school setting in Chertsey. It opened in September 2019.
The nursery has its own team: an early years teacher, early years practitioners and a lunchtime supervisor. For families choosing an introduction to school life, the distinction matters: nursery provision sits within the school, but joining it does not secure a later Reception place.
Early writing begins with movement and making marks. Younger children have opportunities to draw freely, develop coordination through activities using both large and small muscles, and explain what their pictures mean. Marks representing their name are part of that early exploration. The emphasis is on giving a mark meaning before expecting conventional writing.
Older nursery children use different materials for drawing and mark-making, practise familiar letters and work towards writing part or all of their name when developmentally ready. Painting can happen on a big surface or a small one. Writing tools remain accessible in the learning environment, giving children opportunities to return to an idea rather than reserving drawing for a single adult-directed task.
The Early Years Foundation Stage is the framework for this early learning. Here, the writing progression links physical coordination, talk and emerging written communication: children build the movements and understanding that writing requires.
In June 2023, early-years children had well-equipped spaces both indoors and outside, with play extending their learning. Water activities and dice games outdoors helped develop their grasp of number. There was a curriculum concern too: planning from Nursery did not yet specify the knowledge needed across every subject for later learning. Families should weigh the practical learning opportunities alongside that need for clearer progression.
A nursery-specific designated safeguarding lead forms part of the teaching team, while a separate early-years safeguarding lead sits within the school’s leadership structure. These roles give nursery safeguarding a defined place in the staffing arrangements.
In June 2023, adults understood children’s emotional needs and physical care needs well. That matters at this age: support for learning includes recognising how a child feels and what their body needs. A lunchtime supervisor also forms part of the Little Gems team, giving the nursery a role specifically associated with lunchtime care.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee admission to Reception. Families must make a separate school application through the normal admissions process; the nursery place should never be treated as a reservation for the next stage.
For September 2026 entry, applications went through Surrey County Council, online or using a paper form requested from its contact centre. The deadline for that cycle was 15 January 2026. That date has passed. The important practical distinction remains: choosing nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions and processes.
