A morning nursery beside Poolsbrook Country Park gives this provision its practical shape: an early start, followed by collection before midday. Nursery forms part of Poolsbrook Primary Academy on Cottage Close in Chesterfield, where the school’s age range begins at three.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 14 and 15 November 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The nursery session runs from 8:35am to 11:35am. For families, that means planning around a morning of nursery rather than the main school’s afternoon finish.
Early reading preparation is a concrete part of the learning. In November 2023, nursery children were developing skills that come before phonics, putting the beginnings of reading into the Nursery Year. This is preparation for learning to read, rather than a claim that nursery children are already reading independently.
Learning participation also needs attention. In November 2023, a few children in early years needed help to take part appropriately in activities. Support with joining in is therefore part of the picture alongside the early reading work.
Additional needs have a school-based route for support. The school uses a graduated approach: extra help can come first, with a more detailed assessment considered if a child’s progress remains below expectations. That assessment follows discussion with parents, giving families a part in decisions about the next step. The special educational needs coordinator can be reached at sendco@poolsbrook.derbyshire.sch.uk.
Family support extends beyond learning. The school’s Early Help offer can bring families and staff together to discuss concerns, assess needs and agree actions. Team Around the Family meetings may involve professionals from beyond school. This offer operates during term time, with signposting to other agencies during holidays.
For prescribed medication, special arrangements require written instructions covering dosage and timing. Keeping emergency contact details current matters too: injuries requiring further treatment prompt immediate contact with parents.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route, even when their child already attends nursery.
Applications go through Derbyshire County Council under its coordinated admissions scheme. For September 2027 entry, the application round opens on 9 November 2026 and closes on 15 January 2027; offers follow on 16 April 2027. Put the application deadline in the diary separately from nursery arrangements.
The morning session makes the 11:35am collection time a decisive consideration for working families. Nursery enquiries and school visits can be arranged through the admin team on 01246 472540 or info@poolsbrook.derbyshire.sch.uk. Open mornings include a tour of the school and grounds, giving families a chance to see the setting and discuss joining.
Uniform allows some practical flexibility. Nursery children may wear joggers in grey or black. A navy cardigan or knitted jumper is paired with a polo shirt in red, white or navy, and branded clothing is optional. Families can therefore choose plain items while following the school’s colours.
The nursery session runs from 8:35am until 11:35am.
