Where the River Lavant threads south through the West Sussex coastal plain, Chichester has served as county town, market centre, and cathedral city for nearly two thousand years. The 12th-century cathedral anchors a compact medieval core still largely framed by Roman walls, lending the city a layered character that distinguishes it from larger coastal neighbours.
