Nursery at Coppice Primary School

Seeds, stories and conversation characterised Coppice’s early years provision at Ofsted’s May 2022 inspection. Practical exploration sat alongside language: children connected growing plants with the stories they read, giving an everyday activity a learning purpose. The nursery belongs to Coppice Primary School on Manford Way in Chigwell, and children can begin in the term following their third birthday.
This is provision within a primary school’s early years team. A nursery teacher and an EYFS phase leader sit within the school’s staffing structure, giving families identifiable teaching and phase leadership roles.
Planting provides a concrete example of how learning connects. In May 2022, early years children planted seeds and explored stories about plant growth. Handling something real and reading about the same subject helped prepare them for subsequent science learning. The activity joined practical experience to ideas in books.
Conversation mattered too. Ofsted’s May 2022 inspection described adults paying close attention to children and sustaining longer exchanges. For parents, the useful distinction is between an adult simply giving instructions and one making time to develop a child’s ideas through talk.
Indoor and outdoor spaces both supported play and learning in May 2022, with resources that enabled children to engage happily. The nursery’s learning information is organised under English, Maths, Physical Development and Understanding of the World. Physical Development includes motor skills and health; Understanding of the World includes people and technology. Those headings give parents concrete areas of learning to discuss alongside their child’s interests.
The school’s inclusion structure includes a SENDCo, a behaviour support assistant and a school counsellor. These are school-level roles, rather than a promise that each child will receive a particular intervention. Families discussing special educational needs or disabilities have a direct SENDCo email route: sendco@coppice.redbridge.sch.uk. That provides a specific contact for raising support needs.
A separate application. Attending Coppice’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through Redbridge’s local authority admissions process by the normal deadline. Treat this as a separate decision and application, even when the intended school stays the same.
Allocation criteria. Coppice’s admissions page prioritises children in public care, children whose admission is agreed to be essential on exceptional medical or psychological grounds, siblings of children already on roll who will remain on roll at admission, and children living nearest by the specified walking route. Nursery attendance is not included in that list. Within categories, shorter walking distance determines priority, so familiarity with the school through nursery does not replace the allocation rules.
For nursery applications, the admissions page directs families to the Admissions Policy through the Policies link. The office team can also provide application advice. Contact them on 020 8708 0740 or at admin@coppice.redbridge.sch.uk; the Contact Details page also has an enquiry form. These give families telephone, email and written enquiry routes when arranging an application.
