Familiar stories and early number work give Manford’s early years provision its clearest character. In March 2022, children retold familiar stories including The Very Hungry Caterpillar, as well as The Three Little Pigs, alongside counting and exploring shapes. These are concrete foundations for learning: talking about a story, recognising numbers and finding words to describe what they see.
The preschool belongs to Manford Primary School on Manford Way in Chigwell. Its nursery has its own entrance on Manford Way, giving families a distinct access point within the school. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 29 and 30 March 2022; that judgement covers early years within the school.
At the March 2022 inspection, early years learning gave children opportunities to practise communication and physical skills and develop personally and socially. For parents, that means the learning extends beyond reading and number work to how children express themselves and relate to others.
Books were a clear feature in March 2022. Children listened to stories, discussed favourites and recounted familiar events. Counting also had regular space in early years learning, with children showing confidence in shapes and number combinations making ten. These findings concern the early years provision collectively, rather than a separate assessment of the preschool.
Early writing. The March 2022 inspection identified too few chances for children to use their knowledge of letter sounds when writing independently. Some consequently lacked confidence in writing. This is a material consideration alongside the positive reading findings: recognising sounds and using them on paper need attention together.
Zones of Regulation gives emotional learning a named structure. In early years, children work on recognising emotions, providing language for discussing how they feel. Parent resources include a guide and coloured zone cards, so families have materials to use alongside those conversations at home.
Support for special educational needs sits within the school’s team. A teacher leads identification, review and support, and can be contacted through the office. The remit includes emotional and physical needs as well as educational ones, whether support is needed briefly or over a longer period. This gives parents a route into discussing help beyond the usual classroom provision.
Attending Manford’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the preschool and applying for Reception as two distinct decisions.
Manford’s admissions page directs families to London Borough of Redbridge’s school admissions service. That is the route to follow for the Reception application, rather than treating a preschool waiting-list request as an application for the next stage.
For the preschool waiting list, email admin.manford@redbridge.gov.uk. General enquiries can also go through the school office on 0208 500 2143. The office operates Monday to Friday, from 8am until 4pm, giving families a defined window for telephone contact. Nursery access is through the dedicated Manford Way entrance.
