A large bi-fold door gives Windmill Community Nursery a practical connection with the next stage of school life: its space can join with the adjoining Reception area. That physical link shapes the provision’s character. This is Mill Lane Community Primary School’s own nursery class in Chinnor, taking children from age 3 and forming part of its early years department.
At the Ofsted inspection on 7 and 8 May 2025, early years provision was graded Good. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery. The useful detail for parents lies in the emphasis on communication, learning habits and children’s relationships with adults.
Communication takes a leading role in the early years learning environment. In May 2025, activities were planned to develop children’s language, while adults helped extend what children knew. For a parent choosing a first educational setting, the emphasis is on building the ability to communicate alongside establishing routines for learning.
Children learned successfully through carefully planned activities, with expectations about learning and behaviour introduced during the early years. This gives the day an educational purpose beyond occupying children’s time. An early years celebration of Chinese New Year provides a concrete example of the experiences shared by the department.
Indoors, the bi-fold door allows the nursery and Reception spaces to become a larger combined area when needed. Beyond the department, Mill Lane’s grounds include a pond, a children’s garden and the environmental area called Gruffland. These are features of the wider school site; the nursery’s clearest physical connection is with its neighbouring early years classroom.
Relationships are an important part of the picture. In May 2025, children’s sense of security was supported by close, caring relationships with adults. Alongside the established learning routines, that provides a reassuring basis for children beginning group education.
The nursery team includes a teacher, nursery nurses and an assistant. For families considering additional support, Mill Lane’s school-wide SEND arrangements include individual plans with goals covering learning, emotional development and social development. Teachers and the SEND team review those plans and adjust the next steps.
Two sensory rooms are part of the wider school’s support resources, providing space for children who become overstimulated or need a break from classroom activity. Families can discuss their child’s needs with the class teacher or SEND team, making that conversation part of understanding the support their child will need.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline.
The educational transition is a separate matter. Nursery and Reception staff work together, and opening the connecting door lets the two areas share one larger space. That arrangement supports familiarity between the age groups; it should not be treated as an admissions advantage.
