Favourite stories, shared snacks and growing independence give Choppington’s nursery its character. Learning to join in matters here alongside learning sounds: children practise working together through everyday activities, including tidying up. These are small tasks with a useful purpose, helping young children become more independent members of a group.
The provision belongs to Choppington Primary School on Eastgate and includes Little Learners for two-year-olds alongside nursery entry for children who are two or three years old in the school term before the intake. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at its October and December 2024 inspection. That judgement covers early years within the school.
Stories connect early learning with the curriculum. In the early years, children enjoy books related to what they are learning, but also return to favourites they choose to share together. This gives reading both a learning purpose and a social one. Familiar stories matter too.
During the October and December 2024 inspection, daily phonics teaching across early years used consistent, effective methods. Children were eager to demonstrate the sounds they recognised. Alongside shared stories, this provides a practical introduction to reading through listening, recognising sounds and joining in.
Early years foundation stage (EYFS) learning also includes everyday independence and relationships. Clear routines help children understand what to do, while shared snack times and cooperative tidying give them opportunities to practise social skills. In 2024, increasing independence was evident from the two-year-old provision onwards. The day’s ordinary routines carry learning as well as care.
Support for special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) begins in early years. In October and December 2024, staff supported young children’s learning carefully, with adaptations enabling children with SEND to learn alongside their peers. For families, the useful distinction is that additional support sits within shared learning.
Snack time also has a social role. Eating together and helping with tidying supported positive relationships between adults and children in the early years in 2024. Care routines therefore give children opportunities to build relationships as well as practise doing things for themselves.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application, including when their child already attends this nursery. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as separate decisions.
Choppington follows Northumberland’s County Admissions Policy. For the September 2026 Reception intake, applications went through the local authority’s online admissions portal, with a closing date of 15 January 2026. That deadline has passed. The same cycle warned that late applications could reduce a family’s chances of receiving their preferred school, making the timing of the separate application consequential.
Nursery entry points fall in September, January and April. Separate application forms cover Little Learners for two-year-olds and nursery places, allowing families to use the route relevant to their child.
Visits can be arranged by appointment through the school office and include a tour and an opportunity to ask questions. Contact the school on 01670 823197 or email admin@choppington.northumberland.sch.uk. A visit offers a practical way to consider the nursery within its school setting before applying.
