The Greenhouse gives Mowbray’s nursery day its distinctive shape: children rotate between their classroom and this shared learning space, with different activities in each. Outdoors is part of the daily routine too. This is a nursery where learning takes place across several spaces rather than staying within one classroom.
Acorn Class has 39 nursery places and belongs to the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). At the Ofsted inspection on 3 and 4 June 2025, early years provision was graded Good. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Children use the classroom and The Greenhouse in rotation, giving the session a planned sequence of different learning activities. The outdoor area is used daily, with activities linked to those indoors. Early years children can also use the school library and Cycle Track, extending their learning spaces beyond the early years unit.
The EYFS curriculum emphasises movement, communication and learning to manage feelings and relationships. In parent terms, the focus is on physical skills, finding words to express ideas and becoming more confident with other children. Learning Outside the Classroom is a named approach used to support the school’s aims for curiosity, independence and perseverance.
Language teaching has a concrete purpose. In June 2025, staff helped children remember number names during mathematics activities, while planned interactions supported their social skills. Reading enjoyment also began in early years. Together, these findings give substance to the nursery’s emphasis on communication: children are developing words for learning as well as skills for being together.
A nursery teacher works alongside teaching assistants who support children across nursery and Reception. Early years leadership also includes responsibility for special educational needs. This connects the nursery’s teaching structure with support for individual needs, rather than treating inclusion as a separate concern.
In June 2025, early years routines taught children to think about other people’s feelings. The school’s big friends and little friends roles paired pupils across year groups, helping younger children feel safe and looked after. These relationships add contact with older pupils to the care provided by adults.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Mowbray follows Northumberland County Council’s arrangements for community schools, with online applications through the council’s school admissions service.
Teaching assistants work across the two early years classes, providing a shared staffing connection. That everyday connection is separate from the allocation of school places: choosing Acorn Class should not be treated as securing a later place at Mowbray.
Morning sessions have a drop-off window of 8:30am to 8:45am and collection between 11:30am and 11:45am. Afternoon sessions run from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. All-day provision runs from 8:30am to 3:30pm for children eligible for 30 hours of free childcare.
Parents who are not eligible for that entitlement can book paid Top Up Hours on a termly basis. Contact the school for current charges. General enquiries go to the school office on 01670 823198 or Admin@mowbrayprimary.northumberland.sch.uk; an online contact form provides another enquiry route.
