In June 2023, mud-kitchen play, fruit growing and reading development from age three characterised Manor Road’s early years provision. This is the nursery provision within Clayton-le-Woods Manor Road Primary School in Chorley, with a pre-school lead in the team. In June 2023, the school catered for three-year-olds, placing nursery education within the wider primary setting.
The emphasis is on children’s development as individuals. Manor Road aims to build physical, emotional, language and thinking skills, shaping its early years curriculum around children’s interests and their different stages of development. For parents, that means an approach intended to respond to the child rather than a single starting point for everyone.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the pre-school curriculum framework. Manor Road’s early years aims connect learning with children’s needs and interests, with parents involved in that learning journey. The practical emphasis extends to creative work: children explore materials and tools outdoors and indoors, combining activities guided by adults with ideas they choose themselves. Colour, texture and form give them concrete things to investigate.
Outdoor activity has some memorable detail. In June 2023, early years children enjoyed sowing seeds, cultivating fruit and mud-kitchen play. These give families a picture of learning that involves handling materials and watching living things develop. During the same period, early years children paid attention and participated in learning; reading development began when children entered at three.
Technology also has a practical place in the early years environment. Role-play spaces contain technology that children can choose for a purpose. The EYFS computing programme uses Kapow, with activities involving hardware, instructions and directions through Bee-bot. The emphasis is on doing something with technology, giving children a reason to select and use it.
In June 2023, children in the early years felt happy and secure at school. That is a useful foundation for participation in the activities described above.
For concerns about special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), parents’ first contact is the class teacher, followed where necessary by the Inclusion Manager / SENDCO. School support arrangements include classroom assistants and input from health professionals and local-authority specialist teachers. This gives families a defined route for raising concerns and discussing support, rather than leaving them to decide whom to approach.
Separate application. Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions process by the normal deadline. Lancashire County Council manages the school’s admissions, including September Reception entry, so the next application goes through the council’s primary-school application route.
Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as two separate decisions. Participation in pre-school learning should not be taken as confirmation of a later school place.
