Conversation gives this nursery its clearest educational character. In June 2024, adults in early years helped children expand their vocabulary, introducing words and encouraging children to use them to explain their ideas. That makes learning to express yourself a practical part of the day.
Gomersal St Mary's nursery serves three and four-year-olds within the Church of England primary school on Shirley Avenue, Gomersal. There are 26 places in each morning or afternoon session. Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good following its inspection on 11 and 12 June 2024; this is an early years judgement within the school inspection.
Three-hour sessions give the day a defined shape. Children can attend mornings or afternoons, with the funded pattern built around five sessions of the same type. For families, that means a repeated half-day routine rather than a different combination of hours each day.
Early years learning combines activities guided by adults with opportunities for children to work independently. In June 2024, these activities were effective, with language development a specific focus. Adults demonstrated vocabulary and helped children put it into their own explanations. The practical benefit is more than hearing unfamiliar words: children receive support to use those words themselves. Adult interaction is an active part of learning.
Inclusion is an explicit aim of the nursery policy. Its Christian ethos sits alongside equal opportunities and a curriculum intended to accommodate different needs and abilities. Families should read that as the nursery's stated approach to participation and learning.
Regular early years reading workshops helped parents support reading at home in June 2024. They give families a concrete connection between learning in the setting and time spent reading together.
School dinners are an option for nursery children and carry a separate charge. Lunchtime supervision also has its own charge when using additional sessions, so extending attendance involves more than booking another morning or afternoon.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Kirklees manages school admissions, while nursery applications go to the school office or use the nursery application form returned to school. Treat these as two separate decisions and applications.
Morning sessions run from 8:30am to 11:30am; afternoons run from noon to 3pm. The nursery policy provides 15 funded hours a week for three and four-year-olds over 38 term-time weeks, using five morning or five afternoon sessions.
Additional sessions. Extra attendance depends on spare capacity and is allocated in booking order. Arrange it with the school a half term ahead. Booked additional sessions remain payable during absence and cannot be cancelled before that half term ends, so families need to plan their commitment carefully.
Extra sessions may also be added during the week if space permits, with advance payment required. Contact the office on 01274 874 550 or office@gsmcep.co.uk for nursery enquiries and current charges. School tours can be arranged through the office before applying.
