Mud, water and pretend trips to the dentist give language learning a practical purpose at Acorn Nursery. This is the nursery class within St Mary's VA CofE Lower School in Clophill, where play sits alongside adult-led activities and daily worship. The 2026-2027 nursery admission arrangements cover children aged two years seven months to four years, with up to 28 children in each session.
Ofsted's March 2026 inspection judged the school's early years provision to be Strong standard. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Choice shapes the morning. Children begin by finding their names and selecting classroom play, then gather on the carpet for registration and a short discussion. Afterwards, they can return to their own play or join an activity led by an adult. The outdoor area opens at 9.30am, adding another place to explore rather than replacing classroom activity.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum develops children's knowledge and skills through activities across its learning areas. Language has a clear emphasis. In March 2026, staff repeatedly demonstrated new vocabulary and gave children opportunities to use it: water and mud activities explored toothbrushing, while the role-play space became a dentist's surgery. The point is practical: children rehearse words through something they can do and imagine. Questioning and demonstrations helped extend their learning, with activities prepared both outdoors and inside.
Lift off to Languages, Sounds Write sessions and yoga and wellbeing activities feature among the nursery's additional services. Sessions finish with a song prompting everyone to put things away, followed by group time and worship. Before lunch, a child helper collects the prayer candle. These repeated moments give the day a recognisable rhythm and make the school's Christian character part of nursery life.
Each child has an allocated key worker. An annual progress summary and parent consultation sit alongside opportunities to speak to staff when collecting or dropping off. Tapestry provides an individual digital learning journey, and parents can share achievements from home through it. Communication therefore has both a conversational route and a record families can revisit.
Settling begins before attendance. In March 2026, early years staff contacted other settings and made home visits before children joined; familiar routines and affectionate staff relationships helped children settle promptly. For additional needs, the early years leader holds a Level 3 qualification in SEND coordination and works with the school SENDCo. One Page Profiles and Individual Education Plans set out support, with speech and language referrals possible where needed.
Food has its own routine. At about 9.30am, children receive fruit and another snack, with water from their bottles; milk is offered around 2pm. Children staying for lunch wash their hands before going to the dining hall, where designated staff supervise them. Families can send a packed lunch or book a school meal through School Grid by 08:55 that morning. Parents must supply nappies, wipes and nappy bags where applicable, plus snacks and milk needed for specific dietary requirements.
Attending Acorn does not guarantee a Reception place. Under the 2027-2028 school admission arrangements, parents must make a fresh application through their home local authority, meeting the deadline on its application form. Central Bedfordshire residents use the council's admissions service.
Transition support is a separate matter. The nursery lists an individually tailored programme for children moving to the school's Reception class among its additional services. Familiarity and preparation help with the change, but do not replace the application.
Morning and afternoon sessions each last three hours, and children must attend at least two sessions, equivalent to one day. Once a place is confirmed, families choose their pattern using the Nursery Session Booking Form. Email nursery@clophillstmarysschool.co.uk or call 01525 860206 to discuss a place or arrange a visit.
Universal funding covers up to 15 weekly hours from the term after a child's third birthday; eligible families can access up to 30. Parents claiming additional hours must obtain a code, renew eligibility each term and complete the nursery funding form. Extra hours carry charges. The nursery requests a voluntary contribution for consumables and additional services on government-funded sessions, with a benefits-based exemption subject to all household adults receiving benefits. Lunchtime supervision is charged separately except for children staying all day within their 15 or 30 funded hours. Ask the school for current charges.
Teaching consistency. The March 2026 inspection's school-wide next steps included sharper questioning and challenge across year groups, alongside embedding the new English curriculum. These are broader school priorities; early years questioning received a positive assessment.
The 2026-2027 nursery admission policy covers children aged two years seven months to four years, with up to 28 places per session.
